Email Delivery Options for Message Topics #featurerequest

Dears GMF members,

I have a group with around 400 members and most of them have 'Individual Messages' as email delivery option.

Whenever a sensitive message topic is discussed, there is a lot of one liner confirmation responses like 'I too agree', 'OK for me but ...' etc and too many mails are received for everyone.

As a moderator, I collate the one liner responses from many owners and send it as an digest from my own admin id which is very time consuming.

I would like to request a feature where Email Delivery options can be set up on individual topics or hashtags.

or Is it possible already to do so by any other means?

P.S:
1. Many folks would not like set up the option Full Featured Digest in the fear of missing out important mails immediately
2. The topic cannot be just restricted into a poll as there are numerous options available from members.

Hi

I have my subscription for this group setup with Advanced Options so I only get the first in a thread. See the Help?/static/help#suboptions

You can also follow threads or mute.?

Akshaya January Owners Group admin,

I would like to request a feature where Email Delivery options can be set up on individual topics or hashtags.

When a topic starts to get too busy there are some ways you can control that particular topic. See the drop-menu in the Topics list. You can moderate the topic, lock it, or modify its reply behavior:

Screen-shot of topics menu
The same options are available through the Edit Topic item in the More menu when you are looking at the topic rather than the list. The Reply To overrides may not be entirely effective when members reply by email, depending on the member's email interface.

or Is it possible already to do so by any other means?

As Frances noted, the members themselves can also exert some control over which messages are sent to them (Message Selection). This can be done as part of the Advanced Preferences section of their Subscription page. See Advanced Preferences under Subscription Options in the Help page.

Members can also choose to Mute an individual topic through the Mute This Topic link in the footer of any message in the topic. See the Muting and Following in the Help page as well as Your Friend the Footer in GMF's Wiki.

Thanks Shal and Frances for your replies.

I found that it was very difficult to explain people setting up the Advanced Preferences and control over which messages are sent to them (Message Selection)

I would really like to see an option like Delivery Options in the drop-menu in the Topics list or the Edit Topic item in the More menu.

In that way, I can easily set-up the Full Featured Digest for the particular topic and reduce the flooding of messages to some extent

Or may I know why you would consider that it is not a good idea to control the delivery options for individual topics?

Akshaya -- I believe what you're wanting is for some topics would be sent as individual messages and others as a digest. What behavior are you looking for if someone has already selected a digest as their delivery mode? What about Frances' situation where they may have selected only the first message in a topic, certain hashtags, or some other Advanced Preference?

Perhaps all those interactions could eventually be worked out, but it strikes me as a peculiar way to achieve your objective. Is there some reason why placing the topic on moderation won't work??

The existing Full Featured Digest delivery option already bundles messages by topic, so you might want to consider setting up this option as the default delivery mode for the group. Go to Admin>Settings and click the "Default Sub Settings" button at the top of the resulting page. Note, however, that whatever you select and save is just the starting default for any new subscription; the change doesn't affect existing subscribers, and the individual can change it at any time.?

If you want all existing subscribers to use the digest mode and thereby slow the flux of messages you'll have to edit all their member records. Go to Admin>Members, select the checkbox next to Display Name to select everyone on the page, followed by selecting "Change Email Delivery" from the Actions menu at the bottom of the page. I suggest you tell everyone what you're going to do -- and why -- before going down that road.
?
Hope this helps,
Bruce

Thanks Bruce for the answer.

Yes you are absolutely correct

What behavior are you looking for if someone has already selected a digest as their delivery mode? What about Frances' situation where they may have selected only the first message in a topic, certain hashtags, or some other Advanced Preference?
The moderator set preference of Digesting a topic should be applied only if the user had set Individual Messages as delivery mode.
If the user had already selected Full Featured Digest as their delivery option or had setup any other Advanced preference, then it should take precedence

If this feature is not feasible or too much complicated to implement, then there should be an option like Digest This Topic or Get a summary of this Topic similar to how Mute This Topic currently works

Perhaps all those interactions could eventually be worked out, but it strikes me as a peculiar way to achieve your objective. Is there some reason why placing the topic on moderation won't work?
I have already placed the topic on moderation and I am collating and sending the summary of the responses as a single mail in the end of the day which is difficult and time consuming.

Thanks for the suggestion. But unfortunately, if this setting is not applied to existing subscriptions then it is of little use for me because the group has most of the members onboarded already.

Thanks again for the suggestion. But it is too difficult to edit all the member records alone.
