dummyfile."n"

In our Emailed pix album,.I am seeing a ton of "Dummyfile.n[=1,2,3, etc].jpg
I see the same thing in the GMF album.

What are Dummyfiles? (and why are they there, "unnamed" (so to say))?

Using the online message editor, if you embed an image via the "add pictures" (or "add attachments") dialog, the associated mime part (and the image in Emailed Photos) is given the actual file name. If you instead paste in an image directly from your clipboard, no file name is available, so groups.io assigns these "dummyfile" names in sequence (0 for the 1st one in the message, 1 for the second, etc).

These same embedded images can then propagate in replies if the person replying fails to remove them.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Thanks Bruce

in many cases it **seems** to be when a reply included the pics ¡ª the original file had a *proper* name.?

I'm sure that can happen, too...if the person replying (or his mail client/server) strips out the file name.?

Generally, whenever groups.io encounters an image in a message that lacks a filename it assigns one using the dummyfile.##.part convention. They all seem to be stored as base64-encoded PNGs...at least all the ones I've investigated.

BRUCE:

Another somewhat related question on pics/attachments/inserted.??if a pic is pasted from the clipboard, it looks to me that is saved in some obscure filespace (obviously does not show up in the?emailed/attached photos folder.)?
But I had has issues with pasted pics disappearing sometimes (replaced with the broken image icon.)

Am I doing something wrong?? Is there some way to ensure that pics remain embedded in messages and/or wiki pages?? It's also happened on wiki page photos that were pasted in.

Ken -- I am not able to reproduce this behavior. But see below...

It sounds like you aren't actually pasting in an image, but a link to an image located somewhere else on the web. Since the actual image is never resident in groups.io, it does not appear in Emailed Photos; and when that image is subsequently moved or deleted at the source, the fetch no longer works, either.

If you want to ensure an image is retained in the message archive (or wiki page), using the web interface, you have to save it to your own computer first and use either the "Add pictures" or "Add attachments" dialog. How things behave when sending an email to the group depends on the behavior of your email client, but generally speaking a cut-and-paste operation cannot be expected to create a local copy.

no links, these were copied to the cb and pasted from the cb. ?

they were a ok when saved and viewed, but ¡°gone¡± days l8tr. ?There¡¯s times I must paste rather than insert a file due to the command decision/restricting not being to add pix when editing a messages.?

Thx.?

Copying something from a web site generally puts a link on your clipboard, not the image.

If you're not convinced of this, below is a photo from Facebook (I right-clicked it, selected Copy Image from the Chrome popup menu, and pasted directly into this message). Note how the image has not been resized to 640px in the longest dimension, as it would be if it were really uploaded to groups.io. You won't find this image in the Emailed Photos folder, either.

Now select "View Source" from the More menu at bottom right. You should see something like this where the image is located:?<img src="https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/...(AND SO ON)" alt="Image may contain: sky, night, cloud, outdoor and nature" />

This is a link to the original image. If I subsequently delete that image from Facebook the photo will go missing from the message archive, too.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

I have understand the link vs image deal (other ongoing thread.)
Not copied from the worldwide wonderful whacky web, a local file. Opened in whatever viewer or photo app, copy/paste.

But to your point:

1) no ¡°View Source" on my menu ?(iPhone)

2) Is there a way to ¡°force¡± displaying a iNet photo link as an an image? ?Some formatting of the link that I¡¯m ignorant of? ?Whenever I paste a link to an online pic, it simply shows up as a link, not the image.

3) does that reduce used storage space? ?(Confirming an obvious answer) ?Seems the way to go if confident the image/link is unlikely to get wiped off the?wwww.?

4). Can I paste a link (showing as an image not link) to a gio pic? Rather than uploading another pic? (reduce precious space used up.)
