Direct Add without Email to User
#addmembers
PACC Forums Admin
HI,
I'm trying to get a group transferred from Yahoo and clean up the membership in the process.? Until that clean up is done, I don't want to confuse people with messages from Groups.IO as they have not yet been informed about it.? It seems that over the years, many members of our club have never gotten onto Yahoo so were not included in the Transfer.? I want to now, do a direct add of those people.?? In the transfer tool, there is a check box that prevents emails going to the transferred members.? I want to do the same thing with my direct add.? In other words, I want to add a list of new people to both the Main group and one subgroup without them receiving an email about being added.? ?All members will be notified on the day we officially switch from Yahoo to Groups.IO so they will be notified at the right time. How do I keep them from getting a notice when I do the direct add? Thanks -- Dan? |
Dan,
In the transfer tool, there is a check box that prevents emails going to the transferred members. Is that still available? It is no longer in the initial list of checkboxes. ? I want to do the same thing with my direct add. You cannot. You can add content to the message, but you can't eliminate the message entirely nor even edit the boilerplate that surrounds the customized section. ? All members will be notified on the day we officially switch from Yahoo to Groups.IO so they will be notified at the right time. It looks like Groups.io believes that "the right time" is when they are added. A mandatory part of the "You've been added" messages (for both transfers and Direct Add) is the opt-out link. I imagine that is there for abuse mitigation. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Denver Fox,
I think that is what I'll need to do (hold off the Direct add until launch day).? My mess in yahoo had all sorts of permutations (In Yahoo and shouldn't be, not in Yahoo and should be, Mismatch email address between Yahoo and our club, No name in yahoo, Mismatch name in Yahoo, etc).? All of these are being cleaned up as part of the move.? I'm doing this by exporting the Groups.IO member list into Excel and also exporting the Club member list from Word Press into that Excel and then writing formulas that highlight the discrepancies.? Then I fix the issues and repeat till I get a clean sheet.? By delaying the Direct Add of missing folks, I won't get that clean sheet till after go live but I can cope with that.? Thanks for the suggestion. Dan |

In the Group Settings page, the top menu has a button for "Member Notices".? where you can apparently add or modify the boiler plate messages.? There is a check box there also for "Active" which I don't understand and it seems that if the "active" box is unchecked you get a default message and if it is checked but the text box for the message is empty you also get the default.? I just don't see a way to not send a message at all and based on replies I've gotten here it seems you can't turn it off completely. |
Dan,
Yes,? it's in the 2nd set of check boxes you get when you actually start the trasnsfer process which is after the user is annointed moderator in the Yahoo group Good to know, thanks. ? I think you can edit the boiler plate - at least that is the implicaqtion.? In the Group Settings page, the top menu has a button for "Member Notices".? where you can apparently add or modify the boiler plate messages.? Nope. The text there (for a Direct Add notice type) is only the inserted portion, the remainder of the Direct Add message is outside your control. This is also true for Invite type of member notice. ? There is a check box there also for "Active" which I don't understand and it seems that if the "active" box is unchecked you get a default message and if it is checked but the text box for the message is empty you also get the default.? Both those statements are true. You can have more than one saved notice of type Direct Add, the one marked Active becomes the default inclusion on the Direct Add page. There ought to be (IMO), but isn't, a drop-list on the Direct Add page to pick one of the saved texts on the spot. That would be more convenient than having to pre-plan which one to make Active before clicking on Direct Add. ? I just don't see a way to not send a message at all and based on replies I've gotten here it seems you can't turn it off completely. I believe that not being able to eliminate it is by design.
