Converting PDF to RTF (was: Uploading files to Groups.io)

Anna

I have Android OS. Is there a way to convert the PDF to RTF so that my members can read them easily?

Thanks,
Anna?

There are programs to do this with.? I found free and paid versions available.

2 ways I know of
?
1.
This works on windows computers as a standalone software in the opensource freeware realm.? It works alright on Win8.1.
?
2. convert your files online via ZAMZAR
Upload and then get the converted file.?
CAUTION.? Anything copyrighted or private should NOT go thru any service like this.? Unknown if online convertors retain those files in a offline storage area for their own use.

Can someone pin the original post, please, for easy access, in case we lose the bookmark somehow??

No.? If we did that for all the "important" posts, that's about all there'd be in the group.

Added to the GMF wiki to an existing page on PDF files.
You should use the search box in the wiki to retrieve it.
"convert" or "rtf" or "pdf" "file conversion"all retrieve it.

Given that not every post is equally important to each IO user, might I suggest that those who wish to remember important instructions simply copy the relevant portions of a post and move that to a file on their own computer, thereby compiling an instruction booklet of things they each can refer to.

Sandy (who can never remember where she saw such instructions or what name they might have attached to them anyhow)

Cool.? I got in a Wiki.? Not sure what a Wiki is other than Wikipedia, but that is cool.? :)

Thanks!

BMaverick (james garner?) or others ....

Has anyone used those options on "complicated" PDFs?? I use Acrobat Pro X (not free) extensively with work, and it has a Word/PDF conversion function.? It handles plain ole text simple pdfs with the same standard font ok, but I find once it gets an oddball PDF it tries creating all sorts of Word frames and tables and whatnot that are about impossible to deal with if you want to edit (or correctly display the document as it was originally.).? I'm wondering if those are better at this.

I'm afraid it looks like your only options are to use converters on a Windows machine (there are many free or nearly free options) or to use online (web-based) converters.? I tried a few such converters on my Android phone, but: if I disable internet while trying to convert a PDF, all of the converters I tried stopped working.? Some of them were nice enough to say "uploading..." while doing the "conversion", others simply made it look like converting the file took at long time due to e.g. the complexity of the file, but in reality they were uploading the file to some server.? This means that these converters are merely front-ends to an online service anyway, which you can probably access via your browser.

Say, why do you think it's easier for your members to read RTF than to read PDF?

If it is just to read the PDFs rather than do file conversion, here is another list. Some sound easy without anything fancy, suitable for ebooks, for example.

Why not just use the Acrobat reader app for Android? It works simply and quite well for me. That way there's no need to alter the original document.

RTF has a bad reputation for carrying malicious content. It's fundamental to the RTF format so most folks are moving away from it.

Don't distribute in a format that security-conscious users will refuse to open. Every Android user I know has Adobe reader or another PDF reader downloaded already.

It sounds like the problem you're running into is PDFs that weren't initially?created in Word or any other word processing program. Many graphic-heavy PDFs are created in draw programs that know how to handle the different graphic files and are able to deal with 'adjusted' word and letter spacing. The program that created the file is generally the best to use to take it apart, but those may not be available. I have found that CorelDraw is very agile in taking apart PDF files, but you may still run into occasional?problems.

PDF is not directly editable.? Converting to RTF allows other programs to update or modify content for the user who needs the information.?

Example, my group has dated materials going back to the 1990s.? It's now 2020 with so much more possibilities for our compact tractors.? The old documents users put together show the P15D-25-1 headlamp bulb.? It's a dinosaur bulb and no longer support.? Editing the PDF would not help.? In RTF, a change to H6 halogen or LED bulbs now work.?? Likewise for air-filters and other items.? Plus, those original PDFs may have orphan authors who are no longer around.? Sure, as a group, we do keep the original PDFs in an archive folder.?

The nice thing about having a group, we can share, edit and improve on things going forward.? :)?

Aha! If that's the issue, why not work between .pdf and .doc? Android and Apple and Windows users can use Google Docs to switch between these formats for free? And free backup by virtue of Google Drive!

Actually, it is, if you have the Pro version of Acrobat.? I do it all the time, even in "official" documents from many companies.? PDF format is much more universal than some others, as well as smaller file sizes, so we try to always use it for files on my groups.

Nobody trusts Google with their data in our group circle.? When we moved from Yahoo, many spoke up to avoid anything Google based.? Thus, GroupsIO was the lead solution to migrate into.? Google is known for it's data privacy compromises, both willingly and unwillingly. It's been documented too many times to count by CNET and other tech news sites.? Sorry, Google is not a viable option for us.
