Continuous incorrect removals for supposed SPAM
Attention Group.IO Support person:
This is getting VERY frustraing! I am really upset that one person, in a group that I administer, has about? 80% of his messages followed (within a few hours) by a notice removing him from the group for posting "spam". All the messages are posted first like normal and? then he gets the removal from membership later which makes NO sense. If a message is deemed SPAM then why would you post it in the first place?? These messages are NEVER spam! Question: Here is the notice of his removal from group membership. It states that the message is "MARKED AS SPAM".? By who? This is very important to state WHO is marking them? It says further: "This MAY have been done by their service provider..." Well I really need to know if it was or who did it so we can fix this problem. Please tell me who marked it as spam. It can't be a person because they would see it is very obviously, Not Spam. Does Comcast have a bug or does Groups.I? MESSAGE: This is to notify you that XXXr@... has been unsubscribed from your group because message "Rhett at Tanner, Fri & Sat" was marked as spam. Note that this may have been done by their email service provider, not by the individual member personally. They've been given a link that lets them quickly resubscribe, in case this was an error. |

Mike S (he/him or they/them)
The issue isn¡¯t that the member POSTED a spam message, but marked a message that they RECEIVED as spam.?
It¡¯s caused by one of two things:
Because these spam reports can cause all of Groups.io to be greylisted and therefore blocked for all subscribers that check the greylist, Groups.io has chosen to take this measure to reduce a slew of messages being marked that way by a single subscriber?
They do give a quick way to get back on the list,??but the message does seem confusing. I¡¯ve had several people send similar messages to us as well, thinking we¡¯d removed them for sending spam.? If they were being removed for sending spam, the link in the same email that allows them to get back online with just a click wouldn¡¯t be sent in the same email.? Dean,
This is getting VERY frustraing!I'm sure it is. But it is a frequent misunderstanding. .. one person, in a group that I administer, has about 80% of hisThat's not what the notice says. You're inferring that the removed member posted the message in question, but that is not necessarily the case. It states that the message is "MARKED AS SPAM". By who?Read what the notice told you: Note that this may have been done by their email service provider, notThe receiving member (not the sender of the message) was removed and the notice sent because the receiving member's email service notified Groups.io that the particular message was deemed to be Spam. This happens either because the receiving member marked it as spam, or because the receiving member's email service determined that it was spam. Does Comcast have a bug or does Groups.I?Either the removed member made a mistake, or Comcast's spam filter is imperfect. I'll vote for the latter, as in my experience spam filters are less than perfect, even the best of them. Mike,
If they were being removed for sending spam, the link in the sameI'm not sure what you meant to say, but in any case... Groups.io does not remove members for posting spam - it is left to each group's moderators to determine what is and is not allowed in their group (within the limits of the TOS). /static/tos Groups.io does block some inbound messages that are determined to be harmful (viruses & such) or from certain sources (that have been identified by Groups.io as bad actors). And I'm pretty sure it drops messages that arrive from email servers which can't be authenticated. Dean,
Well I really need to know if it was or who did it so we can fix thisOh, I missed that part. Have the group member read this help page: /helpcenter/membersmanual/1/working-with-group-messages/responding-to-a-you-have-been-removed For you there is: /helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-members/reviewing-members-who-were-removed-because-of and: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/5115 (Comcast is on "the list" of email services that are known to do this) Shal -- Help: /helpcenter More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

The other 17 don't seem to have any problems at all. Happens about once a week.?I suspect whatever email interface he's using has the Spam and Delete buttons in close proximity to each other, and he just hits the wrong one. I have Comcast as my email provider.? Unfortunately, Comcast frequently marks messages from groups.io as Spam.? I check my spam folder frequently, and move those messages to my inbox.? So far, Comcast hasn't 'learned' (after many years now).? If the message is from the groups.io, not an individual member replying to a groups.io message, then save the address in contacts, and that helps.? Most of mine that are marked spam now come from individual members replies, not the messages directly from the groups.io messages.??

Comcast is the number one most likely email provider to mark messages from groups.io as spam onl our site. It happens almost every day to someone in our group with a Comcast email. I can offer a solution that has worked for me. Monitor your spam folder for several days and when you find anything from groups.io there, mark it as "not spam". Comcast has that option. This apparently did train my Comcast spam filter. I have not been removed for marking a message as spam in over 2 years.
Whether the cause of marking messages as spam is the filter or the user, this is something that only the user can fix. The final option is to change email providers. Ullmang |

LOL, that may help with the ISP side, but not the user side ... many online email interfaces out there insist on placing the Delete button right next to the Spam button, even Gmail.? No idea why it seems to be the de-facto Inbox UI design standard! Cheers, Christos |
I've just been researching this for a Comcast user. She didn't know she had been removed until I asked her yesterday when I got back from vacation. Her subscription was fine until she got a new iPad, and she never thought to check the spam/junk folder.?
She's now tried to rejoin the way she did it the first time, but that didn't work. She seems to have been blocked. Unless she can find the email today, day 7, is there anything I can do to help her rejoin? Hollie |
I have multiple members being removed because Comcast is improperly flagging messages as "spam." I had this problem with and prior to moving to Groups.io. I was using BCC lists and Comcast was bouncing them. I've advised folks to add our group's email address as to the "safe sender" list, but I doubt many bother to do that. I forward the message I get, copy the email from the message into the TO: field, then I insert a brief note that I keep in a keyboard macro: ----- Let me know if you need any help resubscribing. You should receive a link from groups.io to make it easy. I can explain if their email doesn't explain well enough how this can happen. Often, it's the user's email app or the email provider puts an email in the spam folder, where it is unseen by the user then auto-deleted by the provider. ----- If your group is a premium group, you can direct add her address. If not, and the timer runs out, you can send an invitation to her. You could also offer assistance over the phone if you send a new invitation helping her through the process. If a message is deemed SPAM then why would you post it in the first place??I have another way of looking at it that hasn't fully been mentioned yet.? You say that he gets removed about 80% of the time a few hours after HE sends a message - what if he has his email delivery set to individual messages from your group and when he sends in a message he deletes the email that he receives back that is his message because he already knows what it says because he wrote it?? If he deletes the emails that contain the message he sent in without opening them he will be removed for marking a message as spam.? Any message from Groups.io that is deleted without opening it will automatically be marked as spam.? Does that make sense? As Pete suggests it may be beneficial to have his delivery changed to a Daily Summary, Plain Digest or Full-featured Digest delivery and then he won't be tempted to delete the emails without opening them first.? You can do this for him if you are an owner or moderator with that privilege or ask him to come online to click on his Subscription tab and change it himself. ? -- Yvette in Ontario |

I'm sorry but I don't find that to be the case in my groups.? I get the Management emails that say something was uploaded and many times I don't open them and yet I'm not marked as spam.? Other times I don't open an email from a groups.io site because there is no photo attached and everything is basically being said in the subject line.
