chat room useage

This question relates to a group which is tagged as "announcement-only" as part of any set up arrangements.
Can the chat room option be accessed & set up and used by members whilst the messages section is set for announcement - only ?

Yes, it can. The owner just needs to set the correct permissions for the Chat feature:

Andy - thats useful. We have some information in the form of a string of messages etc that has run its course, which I'd like to ring fence but still allow comment once in a while elsewhere . I'll try this out to see how it works, regards - barry

You need to know the context it is being used.

?

I looked it up on the internet and it has meanings depending on context.
