can I make a group "email only"?
Nancy,
We're using a group only to send notices out to our volunteers viaThere isn't a setting that restricts the Messages section any tighter than members-only. I think the idea generally is that it is up to the member whether they prefer to receive messages by email or read the group on the web. Is there really some reason they /shouldn't/ be able to do that, or were you merely saying that it is unnecessary? Is there some setting that would accomplish that??You can kinda accomplish this with hashtags. Create a hashtag with the name of your choice. Click the "use by Mods only" box and set Topic Duration to one hour (or one day, or whatever appeals to you).? After that time period each post with that hashtag will be deleted from the message archive...however, it will delete it for everybody, including the Moderators. Like Shal, I know of no way to keep it on the site while hiding it from the other subscribers. You also have to remember to insert the hashtag every time. This can be enforced as follows:? Go to Admin->Settings->Message Policies and click on both "Require Hashtags" and "Only Moderators Can Create Hashtags." If you only have one hashtag established, then it's the only one that will be used. Hope this helps, Bruce |
I agree with Toby unless your volunteer list is so large that your mail service blocks it as spam. Then a service such as MailChimp would be advisable.
I set up a Gmail account for notices to members of a 60 voice choir, promos to community liaisons and advertisers, etc. The account is delegated to other people who can author messages and maintain the contacts lists. |

I did that back in the day... with the result that my ISP was blocked as spam by a variety of big names, even though the list I sent to was not all that large - around 50 members. That was about 10 years ago and it's still sometimes a problem.

My question is - why use groups.io at all?? Groups.io is for group collaboration and discussion.? If the only thing members do is receive an email from time to time, why not just use a group / distribution list in your email client and be done with it? |
Wouldn't setting default subscription to "Special Notices Only" work?
