Bouncing

Donna,
When GIO detects a bounce, it stops sending to that address for all the groups that the address is signed up for. The trigger condition may be all from one group or it may be a series of messages from a number of groups that put you over the threshold. It turns you off in all groups at once. Just like 'unbouncing' puts you on for all of your groups at once. If you happen to be in a number of very active groups, you have a higher chance of tripping the bounce threshold. -Ken Cameron, Member JMRI Dev Team www.jmri.org www.fingerlakeslivesteamers.org www.cnymod.org www.syracusemodelrr.org |

Donna,
Why did I get a bounce message that listed a long list of groups I wasWhat Ken said: Bouncing status applies to your email address across all of your group subscriptions. The issue is first that only half of them are groups I belong to. TheThat shouldn't be the case. Could these be groups where you've set No Mail, but are still a member (and have forgotten)? and secondly I've been receiving messages from the groups I belong toThat I can't answer. I missed a bunch of today's traffic in GMF because my Gmail address was continuously bouncing them. Each unbounce I did was promptly followed by bouncing the next message. Is it possible you're using two or more email addresses for group subscriptions, and not all of them are Gmail? The footer of each message will tell you the address it was sent to (next to the Unsubscribe link). Ken,
The trigger condition may be all from one group or it may be a seriesFor the class of error Gmail was reporting the threshold was one. Late in the day, just before Gmail reported having fixed the problem, Mark changed the response to that particular error to not be a hair-trigger. That would have helped a lot of people, but Gmail getting their end fixed was a lot better. Janet,
The account we appear to have in common is this one - GMF.Just to save confusion on terminology, note that GMF is not an account, it is a group. You have an account, tied to your email address, and I have an account, tied to mine. Our two accounts have one group subscription in common: GMF. So in the discussion where we've been speaking of accounts that are bouncing, we mean the member's email address - the two have a one-to-one correspondence. Each email address is the login for exactly one account, and each account has exactly one address for group subscriptions.* On the other hand, a group may have any number of subscribers, and an account may subscribe to any number of groups. Shal *(an Account can have a second, "Alias" address, but that address cannot be subscribed to any groups). -- Help: /helpcenter More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

For what it is worth, Google has been realigning things so they can start charging for some services. For example where unlimited storage was to be always free, now they will start charging over a certain limit. They will either charge or get rid of things like Google docs and other special programs. I wonder if they are doing a lot of programming to make those changes and it is screwing up the mail?? Janet |

separate matter and nothing to do with the outage.? Google One is a subscription service with unlimited storage over 15 gb,? "Google Drive is a storage service. Google One is a subscription plan that gives you *more storage* to use across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Plus, with Google One, you get extra benefits and can share your membership with your family." Subscription plan is at least $1.99 monthly or more. I don't pay for Google Drive, it is separate. The notice from Google last week was about inactive features and files that are over 2 years old that had not been used. For more info about Google One? -? Two comments: the gmail outage screwed things up in subtle ways besides the gio bouncing issue. I use the gmail client but most of my email goes through non-gmail services. During the outage, the gmail client began failing to poll my non-gmail addresses. The effect was that gio appeared to have quit sending me email, although it was working fine. I was scratching my head because my gio email delivery log looked fine, but I wasn't receiving messages. After poking around, I discovered the problem and went to gmail settings to manually force gmail to read my non-gmail addresses. If members of your group are having issues, this could be one source.
I am rethinking my choice of email clients. I started using the gmail client to become familiar with it because I found myself helping a lot of people with gmail issues. Maybe it is time go back to Outlook or Thunderbird. Or something else. Second comment: Google appears to be entering rough regulatory waters and I would not be surprised if their business model changes in the next few years, but I doubt that this outage is related. Reports say that an internal automatic storage allocation system failed and some of their systems ran out of space for 40 minutes or so. Yikes! That's the kind of scenario that nightmares are made from. At Google's scale, that could cause a lot of damage, some of which might be subtle and cause instability that lasts longer than you would expect. Therefore, I would keep an eye on Google services for a while. Best, Marv |
