A website that uses the domain name of our group
Hi -
One of the many groups that I'm an owner of wants to put up a website.? Is there a way that we can use the domain name of our group (<groupname>.groups.io) for our URLs?? (We're not looking to Groups.io to host the pages, since I believe that to be beyond the scope of the services provided, just have the domain be consistent with our group's.)

No, is already taken. Larry Finch On Sun, Sep 29, 2024 at 10:00?PM Cal via <mainevent=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育Can’t the name be similar, though, to make it obvious that it’s related?Otto

Were you thinking you would keep Groups.io as your discussion forum? With a link to your Group on your new website? Some others do that.
?
You could certainly make them both very similar - for example:
website URL: ?www. broccoli. com
Groups.io group name: ?broccoli. groups. io ?
?
(spaces put in to avoid a hyperlink to nothing at this point!)
?
You need to see what domain names are available.?

开云体育I would exercise caution here.? Creating a similar-looking name is a favorite way for malware organizations to capture unsuspecting victims.? They stand up a website that looks like the real thing, but with content that's laced with "bad stuff".? By creating a similar-named site, you're potentially encouraging the bad guys to do the same.? More likely, you'll be preventing folks who are aware of this attack from visiting your site out of fear that it's not real.My opinion, the best approach would be to create the website with a proper, easily distinguished name, and include links on that page back to your Groups account.? On Groups, include links to the website in a pinned post or similar.? Cross link the two with actual links, not through the site names.? The name of the Groups account can certainly be part of the website name, if it's available, but leave the groups.io part out. Greg Otto Nikolaus via groups.io wrote:

Is there a way that we can use the domain name of our group (<groupname>.groups.io) for our URLs?You can't use the groups.io domain because it's taken (by groups.io). What you can do is link from the group's website to the groups.io discussion forum and from the main page of the discussion forum to the group's website, perhaps also making one post a sticky post with a link from the groups.io discussion forum to the group's website. That way, you could host pictures, articles, and other information on your group's website and use groups.io only for your discussions. 开云体育No one can use the domain that is owned by someone else.? I think there may be confusion as to what portion of the group is domain vs group name vs email address. ? FOR EXAMPLE The online service is named groups.io – that is their domain name and the website you can visit ? You could have a group named: HappyRabbits When you go to that online using a browser, you are going to the URL: groups.io/g/happyrabbits (with more after that if you click on Messages or other sections) ? When you send an email, you are using the email address: [email protected] ? Now you want to create a website for the people of HappyRabbits. You cannot use the domain groups.io as that is owned by them. So you cannot make happyrabbits.groups.io (they would have to host your website and they do not offer that service) ? If you try to use anything with “groups.io” in it, instead of being more familiar, that would only make the website location longer & more confusing. FOR EXAMPLE: Let’s say you are able to license a domain “happyrabbits.org” That is clean and simple If you add more to it, groupsio/happyrabbits.org – just too much to remember. ? I’ve not consumed all my coffee so corrections to above are welcome. ? Isa ? Isa Cocallas (she/her)

To be clear, I would not include the words "groups" or "groups.io" ?in your website domain name.?
?
Mark Fletcher (or his company) owns @groups.io
And it would be unwieldy and confusing. Not good marketing for your business, activity, interest or topic.
?
In my example, I suggested www. broccoli. com for the website.
I see in this domain name search that the name is taken already.?
?
Ownership is not possible with a domain name. Domain names are registered, and this registration entitles the registrant to use the domain. ?For info about choosing a domain name and making sure your registration doesn't lapse, see

Good call. You are, of course, correct. I wasn’t looking at the “big picture”.

A others have already mentioned, the domain groups.io is owned by groups.io and is unique.

While you can't use "<YourGroupName.Groups.io> as your domain, you are free to register your own domain, "<YourGroupName.xxx>" where xxx is com, net, org, etc. as you select.

There are lots of recent top-level domain names (like .com, .edu, .org). I'm fond of .xyz, which seems pleasantly unevocative?of anything except confusion. You might be able to find one you like if you look down . -P. On Tue, Oct 1, 2024 at 7:25?PM Steve Haas via <Goatfisher2=[email protected]> wrote:
