Photo sorting #bug ? #bug

[Subject enhanced by moderator]
Hi all,
?
Is anyone else having a problem getting items to sort correctly in an album?? I have the items within an album numbered and had to add one out of sequence but can't find a way for the album to put it in sequential order.
?
I've tried clicking on Name up and down, Posted up and down and Taken up and down and nothing puts it in the correct order - just one item is out of whack.
?
I've even edited it and retyped the name to make sure there were no spaces, etc. in it to throw it out of sequence.
?
Is that a bug or am I doing something incorrectly?
?
Sincerely,
?

It might seem to be an obvious question but are the "numbers" ones that you have assigned or are they those allocated by the camera that took the photos??

If the numbers are those you have added then the only way of inserting a photo "out of sequence" is to renumber all those that are to follow it. If you have 25 photos already listed as 01 to 25 then any new addition is going to be 26 unless you do some extensive work.

And yes it can be is tedious...

Chris.?

I have given the photos names and numbers like 2023challenge-week13.jpg

If you want to insert a new photo between "photo 1" and "photo 2", try naming the photo you want to insert "photo 1a".? That works for inserting photos in Windows directories and getting them in the order you want .? It might work for albums on Groups.IO, too.?

It almost works, but only almost. Having done some tests I have found that for (say) an album of photographs numbered 01: to some larger number to slot in an additional photo between (say) existing photos 08 and 09 then the "a" suffix has to be added to the second number, in this example 09a not 08a. The suffixed number will appear before its unsuffixed* relative.

As to Margo's numbering scheme (2023challenge-week13.jpg) IMHO that is inordinately cumbersome. If the year is of relevance than is it not better to incorporate it into an Album?name? In addition the "serial number" is effectively buried in the middle of the name. I accept that it is a matter of personal?preference but numbering photos 01 to whatever looks much tidier.

* I think I just invented a new word... :)?

Are you saying that photos are named and sorted like the following?

2023challenge-week13.jpg
2023challenge-week15.jpg
2023challenge-week14.jpg

If so, that certainly looks like a bug.

If you decide to adopt this idea don't put a colon after the number. I forgot that a colon (and % IIRC) in a photograph name stops anyone from downloading it; they will get a 404 error instead.

Spaces in photo names are perfectly all right.

Chris?

I kind of agree with Chris, but a new problem could popup if one wanted to insert a picture between 01 and 02. One good aspect of the old Y Groups photo albums I really liked, was the abbility to 'reorder' the pictures in an album by simply moving them around with a mouse. If a person wanted to move picture 03 in between 01 and 02, then a simple drag and drop was all that was needed. Numerical or alphabetical naming did not matter.

Yes Marilyn only it's an underbar instead of a dash.? But otherwise you are correct.? I not only double-checked it, I also retyped it and it still won't go in the correct order.
?
The actual order that is there now is?
?
2023challenge_week1.jpg through 2023challenge_week12.jpg
?
Then 2023challenge_week14.jpg through 2023challenge_week21.jpg
?
Then 2023challenge_week13.jpg followed by 2023challenge_week22.jpg
?
Week #13 is the one out of order
?
This is inside an album.
?
I know at the Photos level it will alphabetize the albums A to Z or 00-99 and A to Z.? Inside an album it won't do that even though I choose Name up or down.

Margo,
If I understand correctly, you now have this numbering system:
2023challenge-week01
...
2023challenge-week13
2023challenge-week14
2023challenge-week15
...
And it will eventually go to "...-week52"

If you are trying to insert an additional photo to <week14>, try this: <2023challenge-week14-01> and then re-sort by name. It works in Excel.

However, if what you want to do is add <week14> between <week13> and <week15>, re-sorting by name should have worked but it didn't. That's more difficult to figure out why. One possibility is that the dash used in the name you're adding is not the same as the one used for the other names. I use different digital keyboard configurations when switching from English to French and often the spellchecks in English will not recognize the single quote from the French keyboard and mark something as a typo when it's not. For dashes, there's a slight difference between "en dash" and "em dash" that can be difficult to discern between applications, keyboards, languages and/or platforms. It's very frustrating that these things aren't standardized. When naming the photo you want to insert, try copying and pasting the name of a photo already in the correct order and then just changing the last digit.

If that doesn't work either and you've tried the other suggestions already offered, you might want to report it on the beta group. Good luck!

Sorry, Margo. I was typing my suggestion just as you were typing your explanation. Here's what you can try:
Copy the name <2023challenge_week12.jpg> from week 12 picture and paste it as the name of your week 13 picture. Don't retype but copy and paste and see if that works.

That prompts me to ask which bit don't you agree with??

As to inserting a picture between photos 01 and 02, if it is named 02a then it will appear between 01 and 02 thus:... 01, 02a, 02... as previously described. (Provided the correct sort order is chosen!)?

Then Margo wrote:?I know at the Photos level it will alphabetize the albums A to Z or 00-99 and A to Z.? Inside an album it won't do that even though I choose Name up or down.

It may be that you have too many characters in your photo names. Get the "year" into the album name for a start, and remove from the photo names. If "challenge week" is common to every photo that needs to be eliminated as well.

If I get a chance I will try to determine if there is a limit to the number of characters that a "sort by name" can handle.?

Chris?

I probably should have said I agree, except I had a reservation about trying to put a picture in between 01 and 02, until you brought up naming the the middle picture 02a. I didn't think about trying that. I'll have to give that a try.

Dgrass1 - I remember that!? Maybe Mark can add it???
?
I've downloaded the photos from 14 to 22 plus photo 13 and uploaded them one-by-one in the correct order so the problem is now solved (for the moment).
?
Thank you all for your ideas on what to try and why it was doing what it was doing.
