The group homepage gives the number of messages per month. Is there a way, other than going to the message list and counting, of finding out how many threads there were in a given month?

Not that I know of.

Interesting to note that GMF had about 47 threads last month and 227 messages in April.
Of course, thread counts aren't an exact science - some people start a new thread as a reply. In GMF, we tend to tidy up and merge threads.
