#bug Pending Subscription Notices #bug

Is this a bug?

In the Group Owner¡¯s Manual, under Pending Subscription notice it states:

¡°Responses go to the group owner address and are recorded on individual members¡¯ pages under ¡°+owner messages.¡±¡±

We do use the Restricted Membership Setting but recent responses have only been delivered to the Owner but not to the ¡°+owner messages¡± section in the individual members' pages.

?

Has something changed?

I am unable to reproduce this problem. Do you have anything else checked under Spam Control? Have you tried refreshing the page?

Bruce,
We're a basic group and this is part of our setup.? Hope it helps you to identify the problem!

I have managed to find one occurrence of the reported phenomenon by looking back at the +owner messages sent by recent applicants. It was not an entirely comprehensive search, but was enough to find that on April 19th a pending member submitted a response to the pending subscription message that showed the reported problem.

Unlike the other 9 or 10 that I checked (going back to late March) there was no record of his message in his individual member record, but his message was listed in the main Activity log (filtered using Message to +owner); interestingly that record was not linkified to either his membership page or any record of the message itself; all the others checked had both links present.

I cannot offer any suggestion about how and why this might have happened.

Makes me wonder if that person deleted his account (or simply unsubscribed) and subsequently applied a second time. That would create a second member identifier (the one now in Pending) but an unassociated +owner email (the one sent prior to the deletion/unsub).

Seems unlikely, but I've seen applicants do weirder things.? :-)? I'd try searching the activity log on his email address and see if you can piece it together. If you can't, maybe it's time for a bug report after all.

But now I can, and I am certain that this is not, repeat not, what Peter has seen. (Bruce; you had better remove the "like" you gave me!)

What happened in this case was that the applicant submitted his pending subscription response after his application had been auto - deleted after 14 days, despite being nudged to reply. His reason for asking to join was perfectly satisfactory, so I told him to reapply but not to bother resending the reply.

He reapplied and I let him in immediately, hence the phenomenon that I described above.

Mea maximum culpa, as the Romans said...

However, I can make some suggestions about how Peter might investigate further.

  1. Filtering the full Activity log by "Approved Member" find out who approved the members concerned and when. Make notes of both sets of details.
  2. Then change the filtering to "Message to +owner"; is there any evidence of responses to the pending subscription messages on or shortly prior to each approval??
  3. If these messages can be found are there equivalent records in the individuals' membership pages?
  4. Are applications being approved by a new or inexperienced moderator who may be overlooking the requirement for responses to the Pending Subscription messages?
The above may provide some clue about what is happening...

And apologies again for the earlier pointless post! :(

Chris

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. ?Without changing anything, the +owner now has mysteriously returned and two messages have been received and logged.

So, presumably a temporary quirk.
