Hi from the UK!

I run a large, paid ?account for a Mac User Group in Florida> One of our new members is having trouble creating a profile and writes:

?I am not sure what is going on, but this is the fourth time that I have set up my Profile and Preferences and it won’t take. I click the save button and I have even quit the web browser afterward and each time when I come back, the profile image, the bio, location and website are blank. PLUS, NOW MY USER NAME WON’T PLUG IN BECAUSE IT IS SAYING THAT IT IS ALREADY IN USE. I’ve been the same email address for decades. It appeared to have taken it the first time and now it is lost along with my previous updating the profile.

He’s subsequently got back in to the account and tried again, but it just won’t save the information. From posts to our group it appears he is experienced technically, so I’m bewildered about how to troubleshoot this.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks for your help

All the best

Mike

First, the @UserName field needs to be unique across the Groups.io platform so if someone else somewhere in the world has used the name he is trying to, then he'll need to choose another. This field is actually not used on Groups.io so there's no need to set one anyway.

Second, do you have subgroups?? If he has already set a value for a subgroup profile then changing the same field at a higher level profile (ie. his account or main group) may not appear to save his changes (depending upon where he is looking to determine the changes are not saved).? He would need to go to the lower level profile and use the reset option to allow values from the higher level to propagate.

Regards
Andy

Hi Andy - thanks for such a speedy response! ?We don’t have sub-groups, so no issue there, but I will pass the other info to our member and ask him to try an alternative.

All the best

Mike

It's not just subgroups Mike. If the person is a member of several groups then he may have different profiles set for each. So if the group profile has been set, an edit to his master profile may not show in this group.

Hi Malcolm

Thanks - the member has written to me saying:

Firstly, I have never used??until trying to join here, so no prior accounts.

So not that, apparently - but thank you for the comment.

Mike

Well, maybe.

There are account profiles and group profiles. If he hasn't created a group profile, the account profile will be used. But if he has, he can make changes in his account profile until the cows come home...the profile he previously customized for your group will continue to used.

Have him go to?/account?page=profile? At the top, there's a pull-down menu that says "Overall Profile." If he clicks that button and selects your group name instead, subsequent changes should appear in his profile for your group. He can also edit his group profile by finding his own entry in the Directory and clicking the "Edit Group Profile" button.

Folks have reported problems updating their profile photo. In particular, deleting your profile photo is problematic, and he may have more luck uploading a blank image of some kind. To the extent that he can be more specific about exactly what he is doing and the problem he's encountered in doing so we will in turn be able to fine-tune our guidance.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
