Change email address error - that email address is already registered


 


I had an issue completing a new subscriber because the password would not work
I removed the member

I re-invited the member with a different email address
Member is now subscribed and able to login

Now I want to change the email address and I get the message
That email address is already registered

The email address is not listed in the group
I expect the address is still there but inactive
How can I clear the email address that so I can now update the new member back to their original email address

You, a group owner/moderator, cannot change a member's email address. Only the member may do that him/herself, via their Account page.

and I get the message *That email address is already registered*
The member will get that same error if he/she has already created an account at groups.io with the other address. He/she cannot have two accounts using the same address, and at present there is no mechanism to merge two accounts into one.

Note, a Groups.io account is distinct from a membership (aka subscription) in a particular group. An address (account) can be a member of any number of groups.

You can't do that, but the member can log in under their original email address and join your group from that address. To do that, have the member:

o Go to Groups.io and if they are logged in, log out.
o Click "Log In" in the upper right corner.
o Chose either "Forget your password?" to set a new one, or
"Email me a link to log in" to log in without a password.
o Either way, type in the original address.

Groups.io will send him/her an email message with a link in it.

o Go to his/her email interface.
o Find the message (look in the Spam or Junk folder if needed).
o Click on that link.

This will bring him/her back to Groups.io, logged in under the original address. If he/she chose "Forget your password?" he/she will be at their Account page, where he/she can set a new password.

o Go to your group's home page
o Click the Join or Request to Join button.

This leaves the member with two accounts, each a member of your group, at two different email addresses. You can remove the unwanted membership, or the member can unsubscribe that address from your group.

If the member never wants to use the unwanted email address at Groups.io he/she can log back in to that address one last time, go to the account page, and click the red Delete My Account button.
