Spammers attempting to join groups

We had a spammer try to join some ham radio groups. He made a very
general comment that was so general that we knew his next post would
be spam, so I notified the group owners and they took swift action.

I had another suspicious person try to join one of my ham radio groups
today. I let him join but instantly put him on full moderation. His
comment when applying to join was this:

"I'm an amateur and find this group to be interesting to my needs.
Thanks,"

Similar to a post another (or the same?) person made in that other
group. You can see it's so general that it's not at all relevant to
our group.

I think it was here that someone mentioned these spammers had IP
addresses from Belgium and this latest one who joined my group had one
I forget the city (or region) but I think it was the same city/region
someone else mentioned was the IP address of a potential spammer. It
might have been Flanders (though there is an east and west Flanders).

I noticed on my phone email that the IP address, city, and country
were listed. I also receive all my emails at home and after then they
are deleted from the server. The email received from home did not show
the IP address, city, or country of that person.

Is there something I need to do in my email program to display this
part of the message that my phone email program displays?

I'd like to see this information so I can be proactive and put those
people on moderation in case they are spammers, but I don't want to
ban everyone from that area in case they are legitimate ham radio
operators, and we even welcome radio enthusiasts and short wave
listeners, too.

Donald

If they apply via email using the +subscribe address, none of the extra information is included.? If they apply via the web, it's included.? The email will tell you if they applied via web or email.? Makes no difference which device you're reading the email on.

Is there a way to inspect the email manually to get the originating IP
address since it may not be present if they subscribe by email?

One of the great features of gio is you can set it to automatically set new subscribers to moderation, and have it automatically remove them from moderation after a set number of moderated posts, up to 4.?

We use it on all groups we host.?

Not that I know of. I don't believe that messages sent to the +subscribe address are stored anywhere. Just the activity log.

We use the 1 approved post before being able to post without
moderation, but we're thinking of changing that to 2.

Hi Donald

I have to say I have received replies to my pending subscription questions even more vague than that but turned out to be genuinely interested in the group, some people don't like answering questionnaires so keep it brief

Spammers tend not to reply to a pending subscription questionnaire at all or give a generic response, yours mentions amateur, I would not expect that from a spammer

If I had received that reply I might consider it is someone with an interest but not the best at communicating or using social media or English wasn't their first language

I might add them, or at least send them a message requesting more information, they would be moderated for their first message anyway and if that raised an eyebrow when received you could either unsub them or moderate for a longer period (I have it set as one post then unmoderate and that works well)

Your choice of course but just wondered if you were banning a legitimate subscriber

You don't have to make it a questionnaire. Make it a friendly ice-breaker -- as though you just met them in person at a real-world club on the topic....

"We like to know a little about our members.?Do you have your ticket yet -- or how are you studying for it?"
or
"To help us know what topics to feature, what part of ham radio most interests you?"
or
"We like to know a little about our members.?What kind of rig do you have now?

No, not banning the person. Just put him on moderation.?
