why are membership applicants called "member" before even admitted?

why are membership applicants called "member" before even admitted?

This is the case in my groups before an applicant even has confirmed his/her email-address....

And I thought I had read in Beta that the terminology had been changed in such a way that an interested party applying for membership is not called a member but a candidate for membership...

Some time ago I mentioned another inconsistency regarding applicants: the pending member profile page shows the application date as "Joined" (even if the member has not joined the group yet).

Don't know if that has been changed, though.

There may be a programmatic reason, but that's just a guess.? A record of a person's choices for a group needs to be created when someone applies and I'm guessing it was easiest (though maybe not best) to just create a member record.? In addition, I've noticed that a person's Joined date/time is actually the date/time they applied on restricted groups, so it makes sense that they're linked somehow.? Hopefully, it can't be too confusing as long as candidates only show up on the Pending Members page.? It's quite possible that this is one of those niggling little things that Mark will tweak 'one day'.

Yes, and I remember all this terminology was a subject in Beta, but I thought it had been fixed. There are various inconsistencies such as the "joined" badge as Marianna pointed out. The NC badge strongly indicates that the person in question isn?t a member yet. And hopefully all this will be corrected one day....

Victoria,

They aren't. They're called "Pending members". A pending member is exactly that: a user who will become a member once approved by the moderators.

If you're asking why the list of them is found as a selection of the Members page (and I'm not sure you were) I think that's pretty sensible because of their status as nascent members.

The NC badge strongly indicates that the person in question isn?t a
member yet.
Addresses with NC, Pending, and Bouncing status are in a are quasi-membership state: group messages are not emailed to those addresses, but the address has a group subscription page where the user can set their email delivery and other options. And those statuses are not mutually exclusive.

An address may have NC status either before or after approval. I have seen NC addresses in my Members list: I've never approved a Pending Member with that status but in unrestricted groups they go straight to the Members list. Also, in a Basic group approving an NC applicant does not confirm the address - so in that case I think they would carry their NC badge into the Members list proper.

I think the same is true of Bouncing status, though I don't recall ever seeing a bouncing address in one of my group's Pending Membership lists.

And hopefully all this will be corrected one day....
I believe the "Joined" column head in the Pending Member list (that Marina referred to) has been changed to "Applied". But I'm not confident that any other corrections you may have in mind ("all this") will be corrected.

There's a lingering distinction between Applied and Joined as the column head in the Members list proper. That one is trickier because some members may have joined when the group was not restricted, and so may not have an "Applied" date at all. This would be true of the group's founder, and possibly other early members who joined before the group was changed to Restricted membership.

Shal,
i?m not quite sure any more now about the exact wording of the mails I received from the system at each stage of a member?s application. I just remember that someone was titled as "joined" although they had not even confirmed their mail address. My group was always restricted, so in this case there couln?t be a confusion between "applied" and "joined". But I will observe this now and copy each system mail I get in order to verify the sequences. If I realize some inconsistencies again, I will report.

I¡¯m just sticking my oar in here because my similar problems remain unresolved....

Applicants were not receiving my set email in response to a request to join.

those people are called members on one of the pages

applicants were getting a daily summary sent to them before being approved.

recently, someone that did not get my automated email, has suddenly become a member subsequent to me sending them an email manually!

i have to admit to finding the system really frustrating, possibly due to my own lack of time to figure out what¡¯s happening exactly....

Tim, I am assuming:
- you have a Restricted group.
- the person used the Join this Group link on your group homepage or emailed to Subscribe. You did not invite them. You did not direct add them.
- you have set up a Pending Subscription Notice. And it is active. ?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices/pending-subscription-notice
- you receive email to the "+owner" address -?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/sending-and-receiving-group-owner-email-messages/overview

You can go the Member name in Admin. Click on it. Click on Activity History. It will tell you who approved the membership. If you go to +owner Messages, you can see what the new member wrote in response to your Pending Subscription Notice (where you asked questions, etc.)

Here are the instructions for approving members -?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-members/handling-pending-members
