Questions re Domain Setup
Hello, I have recently set up a group with an enterprise account and I want to do two things: 1) Set the domain name for the group to something custom, such as 2) Set the email address to the group to something custom, such as ?group@... or group@... The first question - are both of these things possible? Specifically is it possible to have?a main email address for a group that does not end in?@? And secondly, assuming some of this is possible, especially the subdomain thing, does anyone know why the help files suggest changing?the nameserver entries? That's pretty odd and doesn't sound particularly secure, these are things that really seem better done via DNS A, MX, or CNAME records.? Does anyone have experience with this setup? |

Nick -- According to the Pricing page, I believe both are possible. I believe that's what "Your own domain" means. However, I don't believe that groups.io actually registers your domain for you. See?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/features-available-for-enterprise-groups-only, if you haven't already done so. Under normal circumstances, subgroups are implemented in groups.io via subdomain addressing. I believe this is done locally via an A record and occurs fairly quickly (<1 hour), but not immediately. If you already have a domain registered for other purposes (perhaps an existing web site), you can instead use that, and groups.io can set up your group under that. The way I read the help file, you can either use your primary domain or a subdomain, not both (you have to choose). A subdomain is recommended, and I can easily see why, so you don't mess up addressing for any web pages that might be hosted elsewhere. Any subgroups you have off your main group would appear as additional subdomains. I believe this would also involve a little more delay, as it requires nameserver updates to propagate through the entire internet (the group domain/subdomain will subsequently resolve to a different IP address than the one you already have registered). Due to the costs involved with an Enterprise group there are not many here in GMF who can speak with authority. Hopefully someone who does have one will chime in with more details. Failing that, send inquiries to [email protected]. Having paid Mark this kind of money you can reasonably expect priority support. ? Hope this helps, Bruce? It's on that domain that you'll change the nameserver information so that it will point to the GIO servers, making everything work properly. Since this is an Enterprise-only feature, the number of people who can help you on GMF is going to be, shall we say, limited. I don't have an Enterprise group so I don't know what the UI looks like myself. :-) If you end up figuring this out, consider adding to the GMF wiki [2] to help others in the future. For anyone else reading this and considering an Enterprise group to get custom domain functionality, the April 2020 price sheet says that Enterprise groups are $200/month or $2200/year. And secondly, assuming some of this is possible, especially the subdomainThe documentation [3] recommends delegating a subdomain to Groups.io: Groups.io typically recommends that an Enterprise group use a subdomainI think this removes some of the concerns that you have. If you use lists.example.com as your custom domain Groups.io, the you'd still fully control example.com and *.example.com for every * except lists. I can only _speculate_ why one needs to delegate instead of setting up records individually. * By delegating, the set up is simpler and less error prone. Only one step needs to be taken--delegation--and then Groups.io handles the rest. * Groups.io may use wildcard records, especially if subgroups [4] are created. Not all hosting providers allow the creation of wildcards records. * Delegation gives Groups.io the flexibility to change a bunch of things without requiring all custom domains to update. Say, they want to change a TLL, switch between a CNAME and an A, or add another MX entry: with delegation they can just make this happen.
