Hashtag question

Is there a way to make a hashtag only useable by the moderator/owner?. I don’t want members ?to be able to use a specific hashtag.?

Yes, I believe you can set a specific hashtag for use only by moderator or owner.
Go to Hashtags in the lefthand menu.
Open the list of hashtags. Click on Edit.
There is an option at the bottom of the page -?Use by Mods Only
Only moderators can tag topics with this hashtag.

Can anyone confirm that this does what I think it does? I don't like the layout of the page. It looks like this option is related to Reply To. But I don't think it is.

Okay, I tested it myself. If you set it to Use by Mods Only, a non-mod gets this message if they use it:

The subject of your message contained at least one hashtag that is restricted for use by moderators only.
Click on this link to edit your message subject and add appropriate tags:

Sure. When editing the hashtag, tick the "Use by Mods Only" checkbox.

Please note, however, this will not keep people from replying to the already-existing topic (hashtags are applied to topics, not messages). If you don't want people to reply, tick the "Replies by Mods Only" checkbox also. See screenshot below.

There is a Mods - choice tick box as you set up hashtags, it’s at the bottom

I just created a mod only hashtag on one of my groups and tried using it from my member account via email and online - can't be done.? If a non-mod is using it on your group, it has to be on a reply.

I just joined my group under a different e-mail and as a regular member and I am able to use the hashtag still.? I have it set up like this...am I missing something?

Topics created with this hashtag will be locked immediately.

Reply To Same as group Reply to group Reply to sender Reply to moderators Reply to group and sender Reply only to sender

How replies to these messages are handled.

Use by Mods Only

Only moderators can tag topics with this hashtag.

Replies by Mods Only

Only moderators can reply to topics tagged with this hashtag.

I am very perplexed as to how to keep this hashtag where I as the owner/moderator can be the only one to use it.

Several questions about hashtags

1. Is it possible to modify the “rejection” notice to state our group does not use hashtags?

2. Can all the hashtags be changed in a batch to moderator only or do they need to be recreated to be changed? I didn’t see a way to change a hashtag that has already been created.

3. Is there a way to set up a similar file but that is keywords and for reference only? *

*. On a similar note, I would want to set up reference files for our members with our posting guidelines, rejection explanations, etc.

Much thanks.

You can have as many Rejected Message notices as you want.? The one that's marked active, if any, is the one that gets sent when you reject via email.? If you reject online, you can choose from the list.? I use several and name them so that I can easily select the one that's needed.? In your case, I'd probably name it "No HTs" or similar.

2. Can all the hashtags be changed in a batch to moderator only or do they need to be recreated to be changed? I didn’t see a way to change a hashtag that has already been created.
You have to edit each of them.? On the Hashtag page, click on a hashtag.? On the page that comes up, click on the Edit button in the hashtag box.? There you can change the settings for that hashtag.? Be sure to scroll down to click Update Hashtag.

You have lots of options for this.? You can create a file with the information in it, then send a link to those that need it.? You can put this information in your Group Guidelines which can be set to be sent out monthly.? You can Monthly Reminder notice to be sent out.

Besides the group notices, one can also use the FILES and/or WIKI sections where they can upload or create documents of this nature.

Christos -
Thanks for the info.

Do I need to be a programmer or know HTML to do this?

No, you don't, although in the Wiki's case, knowing HTML can help in certain specific cases but those wouldn't be applicable in your situation.

The FILES section in your group behaves like a folder on your computer, where you can put any file into it pretty much, create subfolders, etc.? You can even put photos in the FILES section if you check the applicable option in Admin-Settings.? You can upload a file in there and copy its link and include it in your group message.
?
The Wiki allows you to create "web" pages that your group can peruse like regular web pages.? They can be of any subject you like, how-to guides, rules/guidelines, info, posters, etc.? You create/edit the pages in the same editor window as when you compose an email from the GIO interface.? Think of it as creating documents in some word processor.? Like FILES, you can copy the link and include it in your group message.

If you search the GMF Wiki you can find more detailed info on the Files and Wiki functionality, and also get an idea oh how a document in Wiki can look and work like.

Cheers,
Christos

When you say that you can use the hashtag, do you mean that you reply to a message that already contains the hashtag, or do you mean that you can write a new message (with an entirely different subject line) and still use the hashtag in that new message?

Also, when you say "use", do you mean using it in the body of the message, or specifically in the subject line of the message?

Yes, and there is no way to allow members to reply to such a topic but preventing them from having the hashtag in their replies' subject line. (Sorry, I'm not sure if this is relevant to the OP.)

Does the reject message (below) automatically go out when someone emails or posts directly on line in a group where all messages are moderated? Or is it something that we need to send out?

The subject of your message contained at least one hashtag that is restricted for use by moderators only.

When I tested it the other day, I sent an email from a non-moderator e-mail address. The response was automated and that response arrived by email.

And in Activity, it says: ?joeblow@xxxx??sent message "test #howtoguide" with a tag that only moderators can use, has been asked to update subject via email.

If they post via email with a mod-only hashtag, they get a reply "immediately".? If they try to post online, they get an error message.

Where is this message found so it can be edited?

All hashtags set to moderator use and moderator response only; someone who submitted an item using hashtag was still in pending rather than being rejected for using the #hashtag.

What am i supposed to do?

Thanks

SamiJo -- If you're talking about the system message previously mentioned in?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/27772, that cannot be customized.

Are you sure the message now in Pending contains a restricted hashtag?

If someone submits a message with a restricted hashtag, it is not held in Pending...it is held as a Draft. The message will remain in Draft form until he logs into the group, removes the hashtag, and resubmits the post (or discards it).

Any message in Pending is awaiting moderation. You should review it and approve/reject as appropriate.
