problem with .rr

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have a member who is not receiving most of the group emails.? Here are some of the reasons:

?

Jan2: 4 different messages

pkvw-mx.msg.pkvw.co.charter.net: 452 4.1.0 <[email protected]> server temporarily unavailable AUP#CMPOL

?

Dec 15 and 16: 2 different messages

pkvw-mx.msg.pkvw.co.charter.net: 421 p-impin019.msg.pkvw.co.charter.net cmsmtp 66.175.222.12 blocked AUP#CMPOL

?

Any ideas?

These errors are common with charter, rr, and a few other email services.? As was mentioned yesterday, a 4xx code (452 and 421) is considered a soft bounce.? For whatever reason (or none) the service has delayed accepting the message.? GIO will attempt to send the message again later.? The only way to avoid it is for the member to use another email service that doesn't do it.? GIO is still 'small' compared to Google and Yahoo, but as it grows and its reputation becomes better known, these interruptions should become more limited.

BTW, I have limited knowledge of this, so I hope Lena or one of the other email gurus will correct me if/when I make a mistake.

Duane, I have some experience in this. Here are the two messages. While you are correct that 4xy messages are temporary and should be retried and 5xy messages are permanent and should not be retried, more detail is available. The codes are defined in .

The second digit (x above), breaks out as:
0: A syntax error was detected in the request
1: This is a reply to information that was requested
2: These are replies relating to the communications channel
3: Unspecified
4: Unspecified
5: These replies indicate the status of the receiver mail system vis-a-vis the requested transfer or other mail system action.

Let's look at these two individually:

Jan2: 4 different messages

pkvw-mx.msg.pkvw.co.charter.net: 452 4.1.0 <[email protected]>?server temporarily unavailable?AUP#CMPOL

This message came from the Parkview Colorado mail exchange of charter.net.?
The message had code 452. The second digit was 5, consistent with the text "server temporarily unavailable." The complete definition for 452 is?
"Requested action not taken: insufficient system storage"

They make reference to their Acceptable Use Policy, but it doesn't seem to be relevant in this case.

Dec 15 and 16: 2 different messages

pkvw-mx.msg.pkvw.co.charter.net: 421 p-impin019.msg.pkvw.co.charter.net cmsmtp 66.175.222.12 blocked AUP#CMPOL

This message states that the sending source?p-impin019.msg.pkvw.co.charter.net?at IP address 66.175.222.12 has been blocked.?The message had code 421. The second digit was 2, consistent with the text stating that the communications channel was blocked. The complete definition for 421 is?
421? <domain> Service not available, closing transmission channel
? ? ? (This may be a reply to any command if the service knows it must shut down)

This is not general server overload like the case above. In this case, charter.net has explicitly blocked 66.175.222.12. That address belongs to linode, where groups.io is hosted.

Specifically, it's GIO's outbound email server.

I guessed that, but didn't think of an easy way to show it. Thanks, Duane.

This would be great if everyone interpreted and strictly followed the rules the same.?RFC 5321 was issued in 2008. There have been lots of interpretations and embellishments since then. And there are may still be be email servers following rules previous to RFC5321.

Lots more details here:?

Gerald, I agree. The RFC does allow free-form text after the machine-readable three digit codes and some providers (e.g., Yahoo) do provide information, but you are right: there are so many things that can go wrong, laid upon a relatively small set of codes, that ambiguity is the inevitable result.

Coincidentally, I JUST got the bouncing message and had to unbounce.? It¡¯s the stupid Road Runner email account doing this.
I also have a Rail Passenger Association account (paid membership) and that keeps cancelling my membership and that is directly related to the road runner (.rr) mail account.
?
I am trying to shift everything off that account and use a different? email server.
