My Yahoo Group already exists on groups.io

Harry

How can I find out who the owner is?

Harry

I emailed that address and have not heard back.? Is it possible somebody created it and abandoned it?

Well, check out the settings for the group on the group homepage.
Is it moderated or not? "Posts to this group do not require approval from the moderators." - unmoderated.
Is the message archive accessible to you? "Archives are visible to anyone." - public
Even if it is a restricted group, you can see the date (or if today) the last post - on left under Group Information.

Why not join the group? You can always unsubscribe. At least you will find out if there are many of your old group there.

Doesn't sound abandoned.? I'd join and post a message to see if it gets approved, rejected, or ignored.? There have been a few cases I've heard of where someone used a YG name so their 'opponents' couldn't.? Nothing that can be done about it as far as I know.

Exactly what I tried - posted something but it has not been approved.? groups.io must have a record of the owner and whether a group is stagnant.

Whoa! A bit of a free-for-all!
So you can see the messages without joining. Anyone can!
Unmoderated (except one or more posts).
And no permission needed to join.
So just click on Join this group.
You can always ask.

I suggest though that you are careful what you post since the whole world can see what you post.?

Join and check out the message or messages. Open any to see what you can glean from the email address.

Good luck.

With the settings you provided, the owner or moderator will have to moderate at least your first message.
Did you see who the owner is from any posts?

Harry, this is just members helping members. We aren't staff! And I doubt that support would help you at this point. Perhaps not at all.

Also the group is probably new on Groups.io so not much activity yet.

There is another possibility. Someone wanted to hijack one of my YG and registered the name with GIO, then transferred some of the files without Mod priviledges on YG.
Sound unlikely? Well, it happened to me. Fortunately the hijacker was not able to get the YG membership list. I complained to GIO, without effect.

I had to change the group name when transferring from YG to GIO, and because of bad timing, it cost another $110.? :((

You might contact the owner and ask if they were holding the name for your group. I did that for a couple groups. One group I did it for turned out to be an orphan and I'm trying to pull it?together again?now.
?
Support has intervened in a couple cases like this, but it's always been?on a case-by-case basis. It's important to try to contact the owner and work things out first. Some group names have been claimed by upset rejected Y! group members seeking their own twisted version of revenge.?If you go to support, you need to have all your facts straight and make a very?good case.
?
This is one reason why group owners should have been paying attention in the past?and acted proactively. It cost nothing to set up a duplicate group on groups.io to reserve the name.

I only posted one thing saying "Testing".? It hasn't gone through yet.? There are no other messages.

Harry

There are no posts there.? Mine would be the first.

Frances,

Does GIO offer the ability to have groups un-moderated?? Some of ours on YG were and beginning in 2015 ended up having huge amounts of spam postings that were gross messages.? And if attachment images can be added, it will be a visual shock to for anyone coming across that group.

Harry

I think that is EXACTLY what happened.? I have created a new group called REALGroupName.

I never received any email from Yahoo! about this and while I saw the message on the page, it was referring to content, not that Yahoo! Groups was effectively going away (saying it is still an email list is SO disingenuous).

Is there a simple way to still extract the membership list from the Yahoo! group?? I am still owner on that list.

Thanks to ALL of you for your help.? It is sincerely appreciated.

Yes, they can be unmoderated. But you would have to moderate at least their first message if it is an unrestricted group.

Check out the Spam Control in Settings.
You must choose from among these four options. At least one of these options must be set as a spam-control measure.
?
  • Restricted Membership - Moderators must approve any new subscribers.
  • Announcement Group - Only Owners and Moderators are allowed to post.
  • Moderated - ALL messages are held pending moderator approval before being sent to the group.
  • New Users Moderated - Messages from new subscribers are held pending moderator approval. After the set number of consecutive messages are approved, the subscriber is automatically unmoderated.

If you choose Restricted only, you do not need to moderate ANY messages, if you wish. But you will have to approve new subscribers. There is no Spam Control setting that will allow a new subscriber to join your group without approval and immediately post an unmoderated message.

How do I download my Yahoo Group's Members list?
If your group has 1000 or fewer members:
?
To obtain a list of your Yahoo Group members you can go to the Manage Members page and in the Actions menu Export (download) a CSV or TSV format file. It is best to open the file in a spreadsheet like Excel, then you can easily copy the Email column to paste into the Direct Add or Invite page. Note: this is only for groups with 1000 or fewer members, due to Yahoo's Export restriction.

I am hoping that someone may give any up-to-date info on this.

On this wiki page - see about uploading member names to Groups.io

There are two ways to get the membership info that I know worked:

?? In YG, export the membership (and other member lists, like bouncing and banned) as CSV's using the remaining functions unde the "Management" tab. This works for <1000 members.

?? Use PGO. I've not checked this still eworks

And if more than 1000 members?? I have almost 4500.
