"CHANGE: We are no longer accepting new Yahoo Group transfer requests"?

Darn!

I just now stumbled onto that subject in the group.io updates forum, if I understood right it is posted by Mark.

Maybe someone can tell me it ain¡¯t so?
(I have a major group I was Procrastinating transferring from yahoo groups!)

what happened???

.....
I suppose I could just create a new identical group of the same ?members at groups.io....and ?manually add all my old members, or have them join. Right??
if so, I guess the biggest difference, aside from having the manual work about adding the members, is that the ?archives would not be transferred over? Rightz.

I guess most Yahoo users haven't heard about the impending closure.

Since there were at least ten million groups at Yahoo, of which Mark has said about 3000 moved here recently, that leaves 9,997,000 more who are about to get a pre-Christmas surprise.

Alex, as others have said, there are several tools you can use (but only up until Saturday) to retrieve and store your members and messages, in the hope that you can get them onto groups.io at some point.

You have missed the boat, as far as the Easy Yahoo Groups Transfer is concerned.

There are still rowboats available, in the form of ($25) to download to your computer a copy of your group's Members, Messages, Files, Photos, and Links. But not Databases or Calendar Entries, those you must get manually if you want them. It also doesn't seem to get the metadata (Description, Comments) about Files and Photos.

what happened???

You've been living under a rock?

Well, about October 14th Yahoo put a banner up at the top of every Yahoo Group's page announcing the removal of all user content from the web pages, and the conversion of Yahoo Groups into a purely email list service. For the latest news see the and a recent "" email.

I suppose I could just create a new identical group of the same ?members at groups.io....and ?manually add all my old members, or have them join. Right??

That's an option. Also see Moving to Groups.io.

I bet you that when next week comes many groups will get really upset wondering what happened?? Some owners believe it or not have not told their members of this change. I have a group I let the members know. One member is on a group where the owner hasnot said a word . Thanks to my announcing exactly whats going to happen she went and set her email to individual from no mail .its going to be a mess next week?

I had a group transfer started a couple of weeks ago, but due to yahoo problems, the actual invitation to [email protected]?just went out yesterday.? Are they still going to take it and get things started soon?? After all, I paid good money for a transfer and did meet the initial dates, and everything proceeded as quickly as it could.

Probably not.? You can contact [email protected] and they'll arrange to refund you and delete your group.

Right?
True. I did this.

Yup, right.

I used the Yahoo! offer to bundle up everything in the Y! Groups I'm subscribed to for two different Yahoo! accounts. It sure looks like all or most or enough came through. (Lists, Files, Messages)

I used PG Offline (trial) version to grab photos in blocks of 20.

I've set up a new group (here, at GIO), configured it with some assistance from the various help files, GMF discussions, and the like.

Then I used this:

Chrome Application to Download Members
Application to Download Members

With it I was able to grab a list of _all_ the members for a group I was saving and was made an owner for.

It's a lovely application and generated a multi-column file. I saved a couple of versions of it, notably in spreadsheet form (two actually, .ods and .csv)

What was handy about was I was able to simply highlight the one column with e-mail addressees and paste that into the GIO invitation form. Folks are showing up like gang busters.

A handy feature was noting the current mail delivery status of a number of Y!G members. More than I'd imagined were NoMail. The invitation went directly so wasn't affected, however it was useful to understand a rough percentage of how many might be interested in the new group.

So, you can do a lot in the next48 hours or so.

Cheers, John

Well, that won't help because when I've contacted support, all I get, if anything, is a canned response saying they cannot respond.

The problem in knowing what yahoo was going to do is that while it appeared at the head of the group page, many people, including owners, never accessed the group page; there was no reason to as everything was done by email.? So don't be too hard on people that missed.? I never would have found out had not someone on a group I belong to mentioned it in passing.......and even then the first time I went to that group page, the announcement was NOT there.

[mod note: or as happened to me, it was there but because it is placed above the group's cover image it was auto-scrolled off the top of my viewing window.]

Hi Alex, Our YG owner and myslef (her mod) did not need see a value in bringing over our ?archived posts on YG. We did bring over a couple of files. But those were files we had uploaded so we already had them on our computers.

Our members fluctuate year to year due to officer elections and chair appointments. We did what you suggest as a possible solution for yours. We created a new "identically purposed" group on GIO.

Instead of manually adding members, we posted a link to GIO on our YG home page and emailed the existing YG members a link which directed them to our new group on GIO.

They joined our group here. No problem. Easy Peasy. A fresh start and much less work and worry on the part of the owner and moderator.?

Hi, I'd like to do this, send a link to all of our YG members.? I have been promoted from moderator to owner but I don't see how to send out an admin message or special notice message so that those who are set to special notices only will get my message.? It will just go out under my account....? will the fact that now I'm an owner it will go to everyone?
?
I know we have done that in the past, admin messages - special notices, but the person who did that is no longer in the group to ask how to do it.
?
I don't see anywhere on YG to do it.? I don't know if that ability has already been removed from YG?? And do you know what will happen to people who have their subscriptions set to daily digests since digests are going away?? Will they get anything at all going forward?
?
Thank you

Cindy,

I have been promoted from moderator to owner but I don't see how to
send out an admin message or special notice message so that those who
are set to special notices only will get my message.
That functionality (New Topic) has already been removed from Y!Groups' web pages. If you are willing to do a bit of trickery it is possible to send a Special Notice by email - it requires access to an email user interface that lets you insert custom header fields (like Thunderbird).

It will just go out under my account....
Yup.

will the fact that now I'm an owner it will go to everyone?
Nope.

Those on Special Notices and No Email will not get your message. At this point I'm not sure what the point is in either of those settings, as shortly email will be all there is.

I don't want to tell you you should go switch all the members to Individual Emails (that could be lot of work) but any member who isn't set that way going forward is probably not going to be able to participate in the group.

And do you know what will happen to people who have their
subscriptions set to daily digests since digests are going away?
Yahoo hasn't said.

I think the safest assumption is that nothing will happen - they'll just stop getting digests. I'd be mildly surprised if Yahoo went to the effort of changing their setting automatically, or changing the code to ignore their setting.

Thank Shal!

Yeah... I'd been under a rock.

Since it's not critical for me to move the yahoogroup uploaded file (I only would love to be able to move all the members PLUS the archives) do I have any clock ticking on doing that migration with PG?
I appear to own PG Offline 4. Have been periodically using it to download the archives/messages. Is that covering my ass in any significant way. That is, am I hearing right that as long as I've got that downloaded I'd be able? to upload that archive to Groups.io? Or is that wishful thinking?
And as far as I can tell (which isn't very far) the PG offline 4 that I have has not downloaded the members. Maybe there's another version (the $25 version) and maybe I just have the free version that's not as robust in capabilities? Is that so?

Thanks for your time and help!

Alex

Yahoo has in fact confirmed that digests will go away. It's on the list of vanishing features in their article at

Alex,

You do have a clock ticking on retrieving a complete copy of the Members list, if it is more than 1000 members. Use of PG Offilne must be complete before tomorrow night at midnight Pacific, probably.

For the messages you have somewhat longer, as Yahoo has extended the deadline for getmydata downloads until Jan 31st.

There's no deadline on re-posting the material into a Groups.io group.

I appear to own PG Offline 4. Have been periodically using it to
download the archives/messages. Is that covering my ass in any
significant way. That is, am I hearing right that as long as I've got
that downloaded I'd be able to upload that archive to Groups.io?
It is. You'd lose only material posted since the last time you refreshed your PG Offline copy.

And as far as I can tell (which isn't very far) the PG offline 4 that
I have has not downloaded the members.
You must use the Group menu, Get Members For Current Group, for each group in your list. Likewise for Download Files, Photos, and Links.

Maybe there's another version (the $25 version) and maybe I just have
the free version that's not as robust in capabilities? Is that so?
If you're having trouble with PG Offilne's access to Yahoo you probably need to update to the latest version. And yes, you will almost certainly need to register the product ($25). The Free trial is the same download as the registered product, the difference is the registration key that you need to enter to unlock downloading more than 1000 messages.

Alex,

Ah, I hope you got EVERYTHING from YG NOW.? And I do mean NOW.

WHY?

YG will be going DARK today.? Not sure if it's 12-noon or 12-midnight Eastern Time Zone.

We are no longer moments to the clock striking 12-midnight, we are now SECONDS away.?

BMaverick
?

Alex,

BTW, when I state we are moments away of Yahoo Going DARK.? So will PG Offline 4 !!!!!? It will no longer FIND Yahoo Groups the way we know it at present.

BMaverick

BMaverick,

YG will be going DARK today. Not sure if it's 12-noon or 12-midnight
Eastern Time Zone.
A letter from Yahoo Concierge care says 11:59 PM Pacific time (2019-12-15 07:59 UTC):

Public archive, no membership required (it took me a few refreshes in Edge to get it to display).

They might be prompt. Or the removal of access may "roll-out" over time as most of their prior changes have.
