Photo Description content - Automated transfer from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io

Hi folks,

Just a simple question:

During the Automated Transfer process from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io, does the photo or file DESCRIPTION content from my Yahoo Groups group get automatically
carried across to my Groups.io group or is it just (eg in the case of photos) the photo filename & its album/folder that its located in that gets carried across?
Need to know this ASAP please.

Oh and our Yahoo group is a hobby group (non profit/no $) small group of only 200+ members, but active since 2005, with only 2-3GB of files & photos in storage. It's a huge ask to pay
US$220 for at least the first year. Hopefully we can find the funds <sigh>.

I like Groups.io - it continues to keep getting better. Hope you can offer a better deal for small no $ hobby groups like ours, where we freely offer our time for research & are
responsible for preserving shortwave radio transmission infrastructure history - no one else is.

I'm dirty on Yahoo Groups only giving us 6-7 weeks notice during the busy lead up to Christmas - not happy at all.

No one from Groups.io management monitors this group (as far as we know), but based on previous messages, that's not going to happen.? With 200 members, they'd only need to chip on $1 each.? And since you'll have a Premium group for at least a year, you can ask for Donations on the group, provided you set up a Stripe account, ? (Note: Fee was reduced to 5% on May 14.)

A small part of me wants to agree with you, but given that Yahoo was funded by (mainly annoying) advertisements and Groups.io is an ad - free zone the charge does not seem inherently unreasonable. Mark (and whatever personnel he employs) are having to do an immense amount of work to try and absorb those fleeing Yahoo, and it is almost certain that he has had to buy or lease significant additional storage capacity to cater for it all.

What alternative funding model would you have used?

You might also note that for your money you are actually getting 12 months - worth of additional storage capacity; if you revert to being a Basic / free group after your initial 12 months have elapsed then your storage will drop to 1 GB, and if you want to retain all your existing material then you will have to continue paying to maintain your Premium status.

Understood.

I can't answer that not being employed by groups.io but sure to say the financial/workload shock impact to groups.io from the sudden decision by Yahoo Groups owner
is considerable.

Yup, but sadly only 2 people of the 200+ have pledged funds. And obviously not enough to cover transfer costs for the first year.

Still no answer from anybody re the question I asked if photo description content from Yahoo Grps gets included in the automated transfer process to groups.io
Surely someone can answer this question - PLEASE.

Yes they do.

There are options to paying for the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer, but those won't copy all of the data for you.

If you can't spring for a transfer, you might consider PG Offline as a way to make sure your contents get archived before Yahoo Groups removes it from their servers. I think they've ended the Free Trial offer, but the license fee is reasonable as I recall.

Hi Shal

Thanks so much for your very helpful reply.

Now just the battle to get the members to pledge the remaining amount to pay for the groups.io US$220 transfer fee!

All the best

Ian
