groups.io - language selection

Ralf Brinkmann

hi folks,

my plan is to move an elder German Yahoo group to another place -
"groups.io" looks very promising - unfortunately many elder people
didn't have the opportunity to learn English at public school - is it
possible to select the German language somewhere in the user interface
of "groups.io"?

Sadly no; English only. FWIW the user - customisable sections of the member notices can be written in any language but overall it would be of no help.

It would take time and effort but you could use the WIKI pages in your IO Group to write tuturials in German, including screen shot captures of the screens with Germain language markups.?
It seems the most important things in English would be IO registration (email verification), accepting the group invitation and unsubscribing.?
If you membership is small enough, personally known to you or have friends/family to assist that may be doable.?
Once in your group, they can read the posts written in German.?
I had a lady from Italy join an "English language" IO group I am in last week. She introduced herself and said she was surprised to see IO in "Italian". I don't know what interface she was using, but obviously something translated our English into the Italian lanuague. Her post displayed in "broken (but highly readble) English" an obvious sign that she wrote her post in Italian while I read it in English.?

When I lived in Japan, I often used translation software while surfing. So there are a few options even for those you don't read English.?

I believe the Chrome browser will translate on the fly or can offer a Translate button.? As you noted, it's not the best, but it's sometimes better than nothing.

Goodness. I too was looking for the "language" field in the setup. I can't believe that this platform is solely available in English.?

Hi, Ralf,
we are a German group, too, and we found a way to make it easier for our members to interact with the English-language group. If you want me to explain details, write me a p.m.

Well, it's only been around for 5 years... ;>)? It started very small and is growing more rapidly than expected with the YG announcement.? There has been discussion on the beta group around having other languages, but it's a complicated procedure.? I expect that it will happen one day because Mark wants this to be a world class email group service.? Hopefully he won't get burnout from the transfer deluge!
