using email only
Hi... we have an 1800 member YG group, low activity though, but existing since 2000, maybe 70,000 message or so. I've been looking around the messages here, some wiki articles, but lost the one that talks about how to use email (only) to send messages - post new topics and reply to a topic sent in an email (individual or digest).
What I remember seeing somewhere is that there was some "strange" email address to use, containing the group name, and bunches of numbers etc. - long email address. This is apparently the email integration feature. A lot of our members will want to continue to use email only so this is very important. I suppose if this receiving email address is long and strange it would still appear in one's email client to-field auto-fill easily enough, but if awkward we could perhaps create a more pleasant email address externally that forwards to the groups.io receiving address? E.g., external to groups.io, I could create an alias called messages@... and it would forward into groups.io for new topics. Not sure about responding to existing topics though. Another person is pushing to have us move to a "fancy" system (Discourse) but using email only (etc.) is not clear from what I can see so far. (I know that's not your wheelhouse ;-)) |
Discourse is a BIG DEAL to only use for emails! Way overkill. It's a full-featured flat forum system. Check out Eve Online or World of Warcraft forums to see it in action.
Members can set their preferences here and only get emails, even though the system saves all of them for future reference, just like Yahoo Groups. |
Initiating a message to your group via email requires a destination email address
yourgroupname at(@) groups.io? The system typically "figleafs" email addresses to protect the owners in messages which is why I separated the above the way I did. /That doesn't seem like such a big deal to type to me. Especially since most email systems have typeahead and anticipate frequently used addresses. Lots of email based controls is available if you look at any group's Home page. -- Bob Bellizzi |

I'm attempting to respond to your message from my outside email not from the online forum page. Practicing what I think most of our folks want to do. You are right that Discourse seems to be quite the big deal. The person who is familiar with it and wants us to switch to it believes we should have more capability than just emailing back and forth. From my perspective, groups.io seems to have plenty of capability, including the online forum view, searching, etc. For us to run a Discourse system, and be affordable, we would have to download and maintain/support the software on our own server, otherwise their hosting fee from them is $100 per month. I'm just trying to see what really works and how well to be able to make an "intelligent" decision. This other fellow seems a bit "pushy" in his desire for us to move in his direction. -Herb |

If your group name is butterflies, they'd send email to butterflies@ group.io (without the space)? For replies, the address will automatically be filled in when they hit the Reply button in their email program. If I use the email system (Thunderbird)'s reply button it sets up GMF in the to-field, which is great, even though the sender is actually showing the real email address of the sender (yours on gmail, e.g.) Also, the text of the original message is quoted in the reply. When using the groups.io links for reply to group, e.g., there is no quoted original message. So I guess you can have it both ways depending on how one wants to respond. And of course there are the other options like Mute This Topic. Thanks for responding. -Herb |
