I am trying to transfer the following Yahoo group to groups.io:

This is an amateur radio technical group. The problem I am encountering is as follows: Although I am a moderator on this group, the owner pa3duv@...) did not give me the privilege of elevating members to moderator status. I have created the member [email protected], but cannot elevate it to moderator and am thus unable to start the transfer process.
?
Repeated e-mails to the group owner have gone unanswered. Not even the impending “doomsday” of Yahoo Groups has caused him to respond to my request for this privilege. Thus, I am stuck. Is there any way of getting around this obstacle?

I will be most grateful for any help or suggestions you can offer.

Adam -- There is nothing groups.io can do to help you. Keep trying to contact the group Owner, or plead your case to Yahoo Groups support.? If you cannot get anyone's attention, your only option in this case is to abandon the Easy Group Transfer process and proceed to migrate the subscribers and group content manually. There have been many posts on this over the past few days, so read through the message archive for tips and advice on how to do a transfer "on the cheap." As for getting your money back, you will have to contact [email protected]?on that one. Sorry, Bruce

one point that I think you might not be clear on.? You can not
create the [email protected] account on your yahoo group.? You
have to invite that account to become a member.? Once Mark accepts
the invitation then the moderator of the Yahoo group with
membership rights has to elevate the [email protected] account to
moderator.? None of the boxes need to be checked for moderator but
the account must be in the moderator group.? If you can't do that
and the moderator with those privileges is mia or will not do it
then you are just stuck.? Is the problem that PA3DUV will not
elevate that account to moderator (when Mark accepts the
invitation)?? If he simply has not answered then it might be that
he is incapacitated or SK.? Yahoo used to have a procedure for
getting someone promoted to owner but that stopped when Verizon
bought Yahoo.? I know because I can't even post to the Kenwood
R5000 group because the owner is MIA.

I understand if you are not with the tools to do anything and more than likely most members are on no mail but maybe post to those groups that you would like for them to join you over at xyz group that you created on IO groups ? Groups that have been stagnate for along time seems Yahoo could just delete the group . I came across one a couple years ago there was no posts for over 3 years .The owner had died the moderator left so it sets .

You can ask Yahoo to make you a moderator. I know someone who stepped up to be moderator of a woner/mod abandoned group that was hit by spammers in order to stop it. Given the approaching armageddon, they may be kind enough to do it in this instance.

Hi Jim, Thanks! You have summed up my problem 100% accurately. I had failed to mention that I had invited [email protected] to become a member of the Yahoo group in question. Mark accepted the invitation, but now I am "stuck" because I cannot reach PA3DUV. He does not answer my e-mails, nor has he reacted to Yahoo's warnings. The best I can hope for is to capture the old messages, files and photos an place the in the Files and Photos sections of the new groups.io icom2kl group, but the members will not be transferred. There is a program "PGOffline" which will do this, but I have to buy the full version. Cheers, Adam

If you are to move only member email addresses, it can be done by downloading to Excel file and the copying the address column and uploading it. No need for any programs.

The best I can hope for is to capture the old messages, files and photos an place the in the Files and Photos sections of the new icom2kl group, but the members will not be transferred. There is a program "PGOffline" which will do this, but I have to buy the full version.

I may be mistaken, but I believe you can use it for a week or two as a trial before you have to register it. If you can convert it to a different format, that may be enough to do what you need without cost.

Hey Adam (and anybody else stuck with this problem), It's possible that the email address that Y!G has for the list owner is actually a dead or abandoned address.? If you have that email address, try sending an email to the same name at gmail.com.? Example:? if the owner's email was tjohnson5@...,?try sending email to tjohnson5@...? If you know her name was Thea Johnson, try thea.johnson@....? This is just grasping at straws here, but nothing else has worked for you has it? If you know the person's name, or feel like doing some more sleuthing, try to do an internet search for their name and the clubs/interests you know about them.? You may be able to find their current email address. If you *do* find them, they'll still need to deal with Yahoo, or hopefully they'll remember their Y!G password. Good luck!

Adam; you doubtless noticed that groups.io redacted part of PA0DUV's email address, at least on the web UI here. (I do not use email delivery for groups; my Inbox would probably self - destruct.) Have a look on QRZ.com; there is an email address for him there which may or may not be the same as that you already have; if it's different then try it. Does the Yahoo group have any other moderators with the necessary permissions? If nothing else your experience is a timely reminder that all groups should have more than one owner. Chris

1) PGOffline has a 14-day free trial. You can download messages, files, photos, and attachments. It's fully functional, no pay-for features.
2) PGOffline has a rudimentary "Export to HTML" feature. If you have some web space, e.g., Google Drive, you can export the database to a series of HTML files and put that online. You can share publicly or with a limited audience.

I did just that for a group about a year ago.?? The owner had been locked out of the group and the other moderators were only alter egos and were also locked out.? The owner didn't really know where to go and since he couldn't get in, couldn't give me moderator or owner status.
What I did was download the group with PGOffline, which costs about $30, and got all 27000 messages and the photos and files.? While it was a lot of work to post the photos and files to the newly created groups.io file, I got it done, but I still am looking for a solution that will make the old database of messages available.? It is basically a model train history group and those old messages contain valuable historical information so I don't want them to be lost.? By the way all those photos and files now show to be posted by me and not the original poster.? If anyone wants to change anything, I give them access back.? I would do it for all, but it is a time consuming process as you need to give access to both the album and each photo.
Messages on the old Yahoo group were unmoderated so it still functioned as a means of communicating with the members, whom we invited to join the new group.?? Out of 689 members on Yahoo, only 100 or so joined the new group.?? We are now at 112 members.? What was left at Yahoo were those who probably weren't interested anymore and those who were marginally interested.?? Since no one had the power to shut down or disable posting on the old group, our biggest problem has turned out to be those latter members who were blissfully unaware that anything had happened, except that there were few messages in the Yahoo group.?? Then they decided to post something and did it on Yahoo and the 689 members got the message.?? There were then responses to the messages on Yahoo, mostly by our members who had moved over to groups.io, who didn't look carefully to see that the message had come from Yahoo.?
I have set up email message filters that send such messages to a separate mailbox and I then forward them to the groups.io group and let people know to respond there.?? I then invite the initial sender to join the groups.io group if he hasn't already.? I have also asked members to delete {groupname}@yahoogroups.com from their email, so they will be less likely to post on the old group.?
In some ways, I wish Yahoo wasn't continuing as an email list as that would end this problem, but continuing messages ties in with OATH's email business plans. ?? I will bet that the ads that were formerly on the website get tacked to the end of the messages sent out or that you get separate ad messages.

Hi Chris,
In fact I have PA3DUV's e-mail address, both from the Yahoo group and from his QRZ record. The address is the same on both. He has not replied to any e-mails I sent, or even to posts on the old group.
In the end, using PGOffline, I successfully transferred the archived messages, files and photos from the old icom2kl Yahoo group to the Files and Photos sections of the new GIO group. As there were only about 650 messages, i was able to use the free version of PGOffline.
The message archive is in the form of 13 HTML files, each containing 50 messages. I placed it in the new group's Files section.
I also captured the old group's member list and invited all members from the old group. 120 valid invitations went out, and the GIO group now has 35 members.I anticipate that others will join over the next week or two.
Finally, I closed the old group. I completely agree that any group should have more than one owner. I need to find a co-owner for icom2kl.
