Pending Member

Hello all,

Maybe someone can help me make sense of this.? My group is a restricted group.? I have had 2 member requests in the last hour.? They have both came from the same Android phone, with Tacoma, WA as where the persons phone is registered.? One of them is with a live mail email account, the other with a g-mail email address.? Only the second shows up in the group as a pending member.?

The only way I can figure this out is, the first request may have been deleted by the prospective member.

Am I missing something here??

Doug

Douglas -- It is entirely possible for someone to delete/withdraw his subscription while it's still in Pending status. While I agree that's the most likely scenario, I suggest checking your Activity Log to see if you can glean any more information.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Ok Bruce,

The activity log says she created a user name of Admins.? Then that was changed to Helena.

The next entry says I approved her via email.? I emailed another Co-Owner that is just now able to help again with the group after various health problems.? So, I was going to let him get the practice of approving a new member.

After all this mess, then she created another user name.

The second user name is pending, but the first I cannot find in the directory.? That is the one it says I approved.? So, is there a lag time between a new user gets approved and when they show in the directory?

Thanks for any help.

Doug

While that's a little frustrating, I think you're focusing on the wrong thing. User/display name can be changed at will. The email address is the only unique identifier, and is all that matters in this context.

If your logs say that you already approved her via email, it's too late for your partner to use this subscriber to get in some practice.

The second user name is pending, but the first I cannot find in the directory.? That is the one it says I approved.? So, is there a lag time between a new user gets approved and when they show in the directory?
Go to your group's Members List (Admin>Members), NOT the Directory. If anyone is in Pending status, they will show up on the first screen. To get to the people you've already approved, you may have to pull down the blue Pending menu at top left and select Members. If it already says Members, then no one is in Pending status.

By default, newest subscribers sort to the top of the resulting list. If they don't, click the Applied label at far right until it displays a downward-pointing caret. Now look in the first few entries for the email address that your partner approved. If it's there, nothing is awry. Any names you might see -- user or display -- do not matter.

I hope this helps. If not, I'm probably more confused than you are.

Bruce

Thank You Bruce.

When I look at admin>members the 2nd email address she used is pending.? So, if I then go to the pending top left, members.? There is the other email address.? So, I suppose it does not matter one way or the other as far as her being approved.? It is just all so confusing to me.

Thanks again Bruce,
Doug

Doug,

When I look at admin>members the 2nd email address she used is
pending.
So, if I then go to the pending top left, members. There is the other
email address. So, I suppose it does not matter one way or the other
as far as her being approved.
It does make a difference to her: the two addresses are connected to two separate Groups.io accounts - effectively two separate people as far as Groups.io is concerned.

So at the moment she will receive group messages and can post by email (and access the group's web pages) as a member using the 1st (approved) address, but can do none of that using the 2nd (Pending) address.

It is just all so confusing to me.
The key to it is that each email address is its own subscription, using its own account.

I agree though that the current scheme of having the Members, Moderators, Pending Approval, Bouncing, and Banned lists selected by a drop-menu seems more confusing than it should.

I'm not sure what to suggest (to Groups.io) to make it better though. It does mirror the way the Messages, Topics, Expanded, and Polls views of the Messages page is chosen by a drop-menu. But it conflicts with the way the Activity page uses Tab buttons to select among the views of its list. So the UI is not entirely consistent.

Shal
