MX records from Dreamhost to groups.io #email

Michael Ost

Hi groups.io experts,

?

My non-profit has a website hosted at Dreamhost (www.analybandwagon.org) . We¡¯ve been using their mailing lists for years but would now like to manage emails with our abw.groups.io account. That is, we don¡¯t want to redirect all of??to abw.groups.io; we want to keep the website but we just want emails sent to?SOMEONE@...?to get handled by?[email protected].

?

I came across something called ¡°MX Records¡± which sound like just the trick:?. Supposedly they can allow me to route emails without having to change all DNS lookups.

?

Do you know if this can work? Do you know what MX record settings I would use for abw.groups.io?

?

Thanks in advance!

You need to use forwarding, not "MX Records".

If what you want is to move your present list operations to groups.io, there is no simple way to do it, and certainly not by changing the MX record settings.

The MX record on your analybandwagon.org domain points to the mail server responsible for accepting email messages on behalf of your domain.? You cannot change this to point to groups.io, as groups.io is an email list host, not a mail server - these are two completely different functions.? If you make any change to your MX record, you will very soon start receiving no mail at all.

For each list you currently have at Dreamhost, you need to set up a corresponding list at groups.io, then add all the existing members to this new list.

I don't know if your non-profit can afford upgrading to Enterprise plan, but if so one feature of that plan is custom domain name support. That sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

There's even a link to Dreamhost help in that help section.
