HOW CAN SOMEONE SHARE IN A GROUP IF THEY ARE NOT A MEMBER?

I RECEIVED PORN IN ONE OF MY GROUPS AND THE PERSON IS NOT A MEMBER.

HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?

THANKS IN ADVANCE
Karen

Karen,

I received porn in one of my groups and the person is not a member.
How does that happen?
To figure that out we'll need more information.

The first question is whether the pornographic message posted to your group's Messages section on the web, or if it only arrived by email.

If it did not post into your group's web pages that explains how it could be from a non-member. If it did post into your group's web pages then some details may be available from the group's Activity log.

Or is it possible the group has an email integration active that? they don't know about?

If the group owner has set up one of those and a spammer got a hold of that email address they could spam the list. If that's the case one could remove the integration or change the address.

That's certainly another possibility, in which case the porn would have arrived with an #email hashtag in the subject line.

I agree with Shal that the first question to be answered is whether the offensive message actually appears in the online message archive. If not, then whoever sent it was spoofing the group address, not posting to it.

Since there has been no follow-up on this we are left to speculate.

Bruce

If this was caused by spoofing the group address then there has to be a risk that the material was not just "porn" but that it also contained a software nasty of some sort.

I would suggest advising your members not to click on any links in any further suspect messages in case they contain a malicious payload. If they have their own virus protection then (hopefully) everything will be OK, but...
