Managing a photo album

I'm wondering if it is possible to alter the order in which photos appear in an album.? I have uploaded a lot of photos from our old Yahoo group, but failed to get them in chronological order and any info there might have been in the yahoo group seems to have gone.? I'd like to be able to move a few around so that the oldest are no longer at the top.? The sort options don't do the trick as there is no record of when the original pictures were taken.

I've tried opening the photo and clicking on Edit and there is an option to move it.? When I click on that a window opens with a box with nothing in it and nothing to put in it.? I tried just pressing Move and the picture has vanished.? (No problem there; I can always upload it again but it will appear at the top again.)

Can you help, please?

Thanks,
Peter

In a word - yes.

Photos will automatically sort themselves alphanumerically, irrespective of when they were uploaded, and alphanumerically includes whatever identity the mechanism used to take the photo in the first place chose to allocate to it.

So if someone uploads a photo called "Avocado" and someone uploads another picture of an avocado but with the name 123456.jpg and then someone uploads a picture of an apple called "My lunch" then in the album they will appear in the order 123456.jpg / Avocado / My Lunch.

If you want them in a different order (neglecting the fact that there are now two photos of an avocado, which is probably unnecessary) the photo names need to be edited with an "order number" in fromnt of them, e.g.

01: My Lunch, 02: Avocado, 03: 123456.jpg.

Note the leading "0". If this is omitted things go haywire when the number of photos >9. If the number of photos in an album is going to exceed 99 then the individual numbers need to start 001, 002... up to 999, i.e. with 2 leading zeros.

If your members have permission to upload photos then with the best will in the world the outcome will almost certainly be well - intentioned anarchy. IME members go no further than uploading the photos and don't carry out the necessary editing to have a sensible naming scheme or force a sensible photo order. As in the example above duplication is another common feature IME.

It boils down to the group owner / moderators having to try to sort things out by (a) making sure that individual photos have sensible names (Titles) (b) forcing a sensible order using numerical prefixes and (c) ruthlessly deleting duplicates or near duplicates.

Hope that helps a bit; be warned that it can involve quote a lot of work, but it can be done in easy stages. Just remember that the longest march starts with a single step. :)

Peter,

?

My experience with organizing photo albums or photos inside albums, is they need to be organized Alphabetically or Numerically, or maybe a combination of both. The one function I miss from Y Groups was the Re-order function in Photo Albums, but maybe one day we will get that function in Groups.io.

?

As far as the Move function goes, there needs to be more than one photo album, so there is another album to move the photo too

Oops! A major omission from my earlier reply. (Sorry!)

The sort order is viewer - selectable, which can confuse things.

When any album is selected there is an innocuous looking tab in grey (UK spelling!) at the right hand side above the album title banner.

I won't list the options here because you can find them for yourself easily enough. The main point is that what I described in my earlier reply only works if the selection is Sort by Name ^.?

Note that the sort order is determined by individual members viewing the album; owners and moderators cannot enforce any particular sort order. Some groups want sorting by upload date; "my" group didn't, and I suspect you don't either!

Chris

Thanks, Don.? Yes, I suspected that Move meant move to another album.? Maybe that is a way to get the order right but renaming with a prefix number might be easier.

Right.? Thanks, Chris.? I must admit that the photos carry the oddest of names as most of them, I suspect, were originally attachments to emails so they carry the name the photographer's camera gave them.? I think in Yahoo they were in the order they were uploaded.

I only have about 140, so I suppose renaming them all with a prefix number is not beyond possible.? Quite a chore though.

And on your second point, I was aware of the viewer choice but there is nothing I can do about that.? I just wanted a reasonable default order.? They seem to have turned up in the order I put them there, so if only I had ordered them first.? I suppose it didn't take me all that long to put them up there.? There did seem to be a bit of an issue if I put too many at the same time.? I'm not sure just what I mean by too many but one worked flawlessly every time, but with lots together I could see the upload go, sometimes sticking before 100%, but after that was finished I waited for what seemed too long with my machine saying waiting for groups.io.? Escape followed by uploading again seemed to work.

Anyway, thanks for your help, Chris.
