Subgroups and email addresses question
#subgroups
I would like to create a subgroup for a small set of individuals in my main group. However, I got scared off because the page says:
Let's say you're creating a subgroup called sg. After you create the subgroup, your parent group will now be [email protected] and your subgroup will be called [email protected]. You can change main to any other name you wish.Is this change in the email address for the main list required? What happens if people continue to post to the current address ([email protected])? I don't want the 800+ members to have to change their post / etc. email addresses just for the dozen or so in the subgroup, so if this change is unavoidable, I will probably make my own subgroup list using my email client instead. Thanks for your help. Su |
Su,
Is this change in the email address for the main list required?Yes. Though you can name it something other than "main". What happens if people continue to post to the current addressThe original primary group email address and web page address continue to work. I don't want the 800+ members to have to change their post / etc. That should happen "organically". That is, messages posted after the change will have the new addresses in them, and the new email address will be used for Reply (assuming the group setting is to reply to the group). So eventually the members' auto-fill will pick up the new address and the members may update their address books / bookmarks. Su,
So it is recommended to tell members of the change in the addressI would, just so that they don't worry that something has gone wrong or that the group has been "hacked" (that seems to be a popular catch-all worry these days). Also, is there a reason the lists aren't configured this way to beginPartially it is history - subgroups weren't in the initial rollout of Groups.io. A lot of water under the beta bridge, just about three years ago. Also I think the idea is that the default case (no subgroups) should have a "normal" list address, like other list services (list name to the left of the @ sign, hosting service to the right). I think at one point I suggested in beta that the subdomain form be accepted from the start, to prime the pumps as it were. I don't find that post at the moment. But that didn't go as far as your suggestion, which is to make it the address from the start. I can hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth from group owners who don't intend to ever have a subgroup. But if existing groups are grandfathered as-is and all new groups start off with subdomain addressing that might not be such a bad thing. Over time it becomes the new normal (at least for groups on Groups.io). Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
