Some attachment questions
Hello everyone
I googled before asking. 1. Is it currently possible for members who are subscribed via e-mail to choose/specify not to receive attachments via e-mail, even if the moderator approves a message that contains an attachment? 2. I've noticed that if I remove an attachment from an incoming, moderated message, the message contains no information that an attachment was removed (I must edit the message manually and write that information into the e-mail myself, if I want it to be known). Is there a setting that will make that information known? E.g. if an attachment is removed by the moderator, the message would e.g. contain say something like [attachment "very large file.zip" (20 MB) removed]. 3. If the moderator gets a notification to approve a message that contains an attachment, the message is itself attached, so the moderator receives the attachment in his e-mail. Is it possible to set the system so that the moderator gets notification that there is a message waiting to be approved, but without having to receive a copy of the mail himself? 4. Is there an option whereby attachments that are sent to the list, are not actually attached to the mails, but are stored online, and a link to those attachments are put in the mails instead, so that users who want to view the attachment can click the link and download it? Thanks Samuel |

Having done so, the Subscriber record in the Members List will display an "A" tag. See /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Status-Badges-in-the-Members-List, Email Delivery section. It is also possible to set this as a group default by going to Admin>Settings and clicking on the "Default Sub Settings" button at the top of the page. The default will only apply to Subscribers that join after you've made the change, and can subsequently be altered by the individual as described in the previous paragraph. 2. You must do that yourself. 3. If the moderator gets a notification to approve a message that contains an attachment, the message is itself attached, so the moderator receives the attachment in his e-mail. Is it possible to set the system so that the moderator gets notification that there is a message waiting to be approved, but without having to receive a copy of the mail himself? Not that I am aware of. Such a setting would negate the ability to approve messages via email. 4. Is there an option whereby attachments that are sent to the list, are not actually attached to the mails, but are stored online, and a link to those attachments are put in the mails instead, so that users who want to view the attachment can click the link and download it?Any email received by the group whose combined attachments exceed the Max Attachment Size setting will be sent as links. This determination is done on a subscriber-by-subscriber basis as the outgoing emails are sent to the group members.? Note that all attachments continue to reside on the server in association with the corresponding messages in the message archive. They also count against your quota. The only way to keep them from accumulating is to disallow attachments in settings. See Admin>Settings>Message Formatting>Attachments for available options. ? Such a setting would negate the ability to approve messages via email. It would not negate it. Being able to moderate via e-mail and getting notified via e-mail when something requires moderation, are separate things, IMO. It is perfectly feasible to have both. (I assume the relevant option is "Email when there are messages needing approval".) I find the potential to edit pending messages incredibly useful, and I suspect I'll use it a lot, but that would mean visiting the web anyway. Samuel |

It might be handy to be able to send a notification only, with a link to the message itself, but with neither the message attached nor the reply options that would permit one to approve it without logging in. If you can't see the message, either by being quoted in the notification or an attachment thereto, how can an owner/moderator decide whether or not to approve the post without logging in to Groups.io? I have a few members on moderation and neither I nor my moderators are always in position to log in to approve time-sensitive posts. Dave ? |

The response is misleading only when removed from context. Samuel's question #4 was about how to keep attachments from going out in emails, and instead be sent as links. I responded to that question, noting not only the available Max Attachment Size setting, but also where those attachments would reside if someone were to click on the link. To this point in the thread there had been no discussion on the actual deletion of an attachment.Note that all attachments continue to reside on the server in association with the corresponding messages in the message archive. They also count against your quota. The only way to keep them from accumulating is to disallow attachments in settings. See Admin>Settings>Message Formatting>Attachments for available options. Is this true? In answer to your question:? If you do delete an attachment from the online message archive, either per the instructions found in the wiki?or as I?sent an hour ago to Sandra, it is gone. Your group's storage against quota will be reduced by the size of the file. Any remaining links to the attachment -- in previously-sent emails or online -- will return a 404 Not Found error.
