I'm so mad I waited too long to transfer. Can I use another export program to transfer my Yahoo groups into Groups.io, even if it's just the members? That's all I really care about.

You can try PGOffline (). It's supposed to be able to download the members in CSV format. I'm told that??also can be used. See??for a discussion in which one user had some success with this.

Three caveats:
  • You will probably need group Owner privileges.
  • The recent change in Y!G login process may have broken the functionality of these programs, too.
  • I've never actually tried to do it, so I can't be of much further help.
Good luck,
Bruce?

Thanks, Bruce. Yahoo lets me download the members in CSV, which I did (I have less than 1,000 members), but I cannot directly add them to groups.io because that's a paid feature. I think during this time groups.io should open that feature to Yahoo group owners who are now unable to transfer their groups. So for now, all I can do is use the list to manually invite the whole group. :(

?
As Bruce mentioned, PG Offline is a good choice. If it is still working then it is able to download all Y!Group content, including members, messages, files, and photos.

There are also member and file download tools on YahooGroupedia:

These are extensions for the Chrome browser, and require a bit of technical effort to install and use.

And, of course, if your group has 1000 or fewer members you can directly export the list as a CSV file from the Actions menu on the Manage Members page.

All of these methods leave you with the problem of uploading the content into your Groups.io group; except for the Members list - for that you can use Direct Add (if your group isn't Premium you could use the one-month of Premium option, for $10.).

If you can live with leaving the messages on the old Yahoo group and
start new from here on in the new group, how about taking the email
addresses and sending each of them (a few at a time) a link to the new
group to have them join? Or send out some invitations directly from
the group?

The downside is that once you start the new group, I'm not sure what
happens if you still try to transfer the old messages from Yahoo after
new conversations have started.

If your Y!G is still working, you can also wait it out to see what
happens. You would still have the current functionality of Yahoo
Groups until you can transfer or you find out that transfers are no
longer possible (I hope that won't be the case).

Brandy,

but I cannot directly add them to groups.io because that's a paid
feature.
In my PTA group I use the "Group Transfer (Premium For One Month)" plan once or twice each year to cover school registration and any major membership drives. It is a one-time payment and the group automatically drops back to Basic after 30 days.

Whether that's worth it to you would depend on how large a list you have, and how much you detest the hassle of following up invitations. At least invitations are more reliable (and tracked) at Groups.io than they were at Y!Groups. Faced with a few hundred parent's email addresses each school year, I've treated the Premium fee as an "in-kind" donation to the PTA.

I think during this time groups.io should open that feature to Yahoo
group owners who are now unable to transfer their groups.
That would open the feature up to spammers. The payment is a way of deterring them, so I don't think it is likely that Groups.io would make it free. Abuse by spammers is why the Direct Add feature disappeared from Yahoo Groups years ago.

You could suggest it anyway. Maybe Mark can figure out another way to prevent abuse.

Donald,

The downside is that once you start the new group, I'm not sure what
happens if you still try to transfer the old messages from Yahoo after
new conversations have started.
The copied messages get assigned message numbers after the current messages, and possibly intermingled with ongoing postings.

This is not a big problem because the copied messages retain their original posting dates, so they appear in the "right" place in topics / messages lists (which are chronologically sorted).

I'm just curious, what exactly did Yahoo do that made the transfers unworkable? Anyone know? My other question involves motives.

I think many people had the feeling that Yahoo probably hoped as many Yahoo groups as possible would leave for Groups.io. as it would reduce the size of Yahoo Groups activity, thereby the cost, and make scuttling Yahoo Groups altogether much easier. Fewer people left to complain. Has that changed? Did Yahoo take actions that disabled Groups.io ability to transfer groups (members, messages, photos, files, etc.) deliberately?

One question that I have. When did this take place? I just became aware of it (and this group) yesterday.

I’m hoping that it’s a short time before they get the workaround figured out.

The problem seems to have arisen on Dec 16 (ref:?). There has been no follow-up as to when -- or even whether -- a work-around might occur.?

Whether this was purposely done to inhibit transfers from Yahoo->groups.io, we can only speculate.?

Bruce?

Thanks for the link. It appears to be a log-in problem which disables Groups.io export code. Mark wrote:
It appears that Yahoo changed their login system sometime in the last 24 hours or so [as of Dec 16], which broke our group export code. I don't know if or when I'll be able to work around it as it appears to want to go through some sort of captcha system.?Please pass this along to any interested parties.
I'm passing this along! LOL

I don't think we should speculate. If it's not known why Yahoo did this I think it should be so stated: We don't know.

Thank you, Donald and Shal for your follow-up suggestions. I'm seriously considering the Premium for a month because it's easiest to transfer members.

I have downloaded both the CSV and TSV member files from Yahoo groups. Once I have premium, how do I properly use either or on groups.io to directly add my members?

Either will need a little manipulation to put into the Direct Add format, so use whichever you feel most comfortable editing.

For me, that's CSV opened in Excel. Here's a step-by-step:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Direct-Add-From-Yahoo

The author of that page used Excel formulas to create the required text in a single column, built from the columns exported by Yahoo. He even did a translation of each member's posting privileges. That one column could then be copied and pasted into the box on the Direct Add page (or saved to a text file and uploaded).

However, I think much the same thing can be achieved with the Search and Replace functions of your favorite text editor. Though I'll admit I've never tried that method.

I think that wiki page could use a screen shot of the Direct Add page, if anyone here has a Premium Group and could add one to the wiki page. Or just post it in reply here (and with your permission I'll add it to the wiki page).

Likewise, if anyone has written instructions for creating the Direct Add list using a text editor or other means.
