Adding Display Names to email address in the members list

I have a list of new members to which I'd like to add Display Names for those who didn't include them.Owners can do this, or Moderators with appropriate permissions (I believe it's "Set Member Subscription Options"). Just go to Admin>Members and click open each member record (click anywhere in the row). The Display Name on the resulting page is an editable field. Update it as appropriate and click the Save button. Be advised that there is nothing you can do to keep a subscriber from subsequently changing their Display Name to something else. This has been a frequent [and controversial] point of discussion in the beta group (see?).? Hope this helps, Bruce -- The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |
One thing I just found out last night:?
If you have subgroups, change the display name in main; it will populate to the subgroups which do not have a display field to edit.? I did have one instance where the display name was different in one of the subgroups than the others, but when I changed the name in main, it correctly populated in the subgroups.? I then changed the name in main back to what it needed to be, and the changes occurred in the subgroups too. Beth |
Sorry, this does not work for me.? I have created a subgroup from my main group, and migrated most of the members of the main to the sub using Direct Add.? Then I invited a few more members, and when they accepted, only their email addresses show in Admin>Members.? Clicking on their member records results in a page saying the Display Name is "Not Set" and it is NOT EDITABLE!
By the way, for this relatively experienced Webmaster, the System Help is not really my friend.? It lacks depth and doesn't have a Search field. Dave |

how do you change the Display Name of an invited member of the subgroup (who is not a member of the main group)They can't be a member of the subgroup without being a member of the main group.? Just change it in the main group and it should carry over to the subgroup. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDave,>>> ... the System Help is not really my friend.? It lacks depth and doesn't have a Search field. It's a single HTML page, so a search box would not really be useful as you already have the browser's built-in Ctrl+F search functionality. However you are right, that page can really use some updating... Cheers, Christos |

This turns out to be the answer!? To add a Display name to a subgroup member, I first had to delete the subgroup member from the subgroup, then go to the main group, modify the Display Name for the member in question, then go back to the Subgroup > Direct Add, and add the member with the updated Display Name to the subgroup.
May I say that this seems to be a nasty, over -complicated work-around.? Why not simply allow different Display Names for subgroup members vs. their Display Name in the main group?? The reason why I suggest this is because my main and subgroups are populated with domain email addresses, so that when officers of our club change, I need only change the alias for that officer's domain email address in the website, and the new officer is automatically included in the main and sub groups.? But the subgroup member's Display Name also has to change, and since I can't do that in the subgroup, I have to go back to the main group to change it.?? I's like to recommend that Display Names be changeable in subgroups. Thanks,? Dave |

I just tested and when I change someone's Display Name on the main group, it automatically changes in the subgroup.? I did have to refresh the display for the subgroup though. The decision to not allow changing the display name in the subgroup(s) was a long, well-discussed process, Duane -- GMF's Wiki: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Help: /static/help Search button at the top of Messages list A few site FAQs: /static/pricing#frequently-asked-questions |
Thanks, Duane.? Yes, the Display Name in the main group propagates to subgroups.? I wasn't a part of the beta.groups conversation about this, but if I had been, I would have voted for propagation as it stands today, but also the capability to change the propagated Display Name in a subgroup.? I see no obvious reason not to support this option.
Anyhow, thanks for your assistance. Dave |

And Frances responded: The Group Managers Forum wiki has a search box. When the system help works best, we link to it ? Mark has mentioned (in Beta) that he would like to hire a tech writer to write complete help. Even complete help can be a distraction. You have to open a new tab (or find your way back), search there or browse an index, and perhaps read one or two irrelevant articles before you find the right one. I wonder if Mark would be better off with a concentrated effort to simply put good Tooltips on EVERYTHING. (For those who don't know, a tooltip is usually represented by a question-mark-in-a-circle. When you hover the pointer over it, a help bubble is shown, specific to that field or action. You must touch it on touch screen devices and touching elsewhere dismisses it.) |
