Polls

开云体育

I sent an email about a poll a while ago and didn't receive any answer.
?
I created a poll to a group where only a handful of members out of 703 members can post to the group.?
?
It seems the only members who were able to vote in the poll were the members who can post mail to the group. The others received messages back saying the poll was unavailable to them.
?
I went over the list of things they needed to do, like make sure they were signed in.
Only to receive a note from one member saying "I am NOT DUMB" I was signed in.
?
Now a?member rejoined because she accidently removed herself while trying to vote in the poll and before I could change her status so she can't post in the group, she voted.
?
So now I am beginning to think that only members who can write to the group can vote in polls. Ilene

"New Poll" used to be buried within "New Topic"...you had to click "New Topic" first and from the resulting screen click on the "New Poll" button. Although Mark has very recently moved it back out to its own left-side menu item it's likely that the two still share the same member permissions.

The poll is there.
I just looked
It is message?#396
?
Beck you wouldn't be able to vote as you do no have permission to post to that group and that is maybe why you don't see the poll.
?
The results show that only 10 members voted.
9 of those members had permission to post email to the group.
1 did at the time of joining and then her permissions were changed.
?
No member?was able to vote whose status was cannot post to the group.
Those members had sent me email to my personal email address with their vote.

Yes, I know that NEW POLLS?used to be buried within new topic.
This poll was set up after?Mark had made the change to move the New Poll to it's own spot on the left side of the menu.
?
Only the members whose settings are?set so they can post to the group?were the only?members who?were able to?vote in the poll.?
?
I haven't closed the poll yet.? I have checked the member permissions and the only members who were able to vote are the members who can send mail to the group.
?
Now Beck is in my group and she just answered email right before you did Bruce.
She said she couldn't find the poll.
Now if I change her settings so she can post to the group, she will be able to vote in the poll.

Okay I did a test on my own and my conclusion on polls is as follows:
?
Beck wrote to this group GMF saying she couldn't see my poll therefore she couldn't vote. She is in my group. She didn't have posting privileges in the group. I had found that only members?who could send mail to the group were able to vote. So what I did was?change her status so she could post to the group...............?and wrote to her privately letting her know I changed her status and to try again to vote.
?
Well now that she can post to the group she was able to vote in the poll.?
?
So now I am thinking that this is a BUG.....
All members regardless of their posting privileges should?be able to vote in a poll.

Yes and no.? A poll is a message, so those that can't post shouldn't be able to respond.? I do agree (I think) that anyone should be able to vote in a poll though.? Mark may be able to tweak this if you send a report to support.

Okay you?said you won't want to join a group where you couldn't post.
Let me explain about this group. We are a group of over 700 members.
?
This?group is a Signature?Tag group. Members join to get?signature tags that they can use in their email that are personalized with their name.?
?
The members who offer these tags for free are the only ones who are allowed to post to the group. They put up tag offers where the members then reply (replies go to the sender) and they request the tag to have their name added to it.
?
So there isn't any reason for all the members being able?to post to the group.?
?
But in the case of the poll, it involved all the members feedback.
I started playing games for tags in the group. Most members when playing the game enjoyed them but I wanted to find out if the majority of the members wanted the games to continue. That was the reason for needing the feedback from the members in the poll. I didn't need all the extra mail coming from them telling me their thoughts and how they couldn't vote.

At this time that cannot happen unless you give all the members posting privileges in the group. If you are the only one able to post to the group, then you will be the only one able to vote in the poll at this time.
?
What I?think needs to happen if you write to support letting Mark know that you'd like that option too and others write to support saying they would like that option?and it isn't?only me that asked about it, then maybe it will happen quicker. ?
?
What it think happened over this past year or so, many of the graphic art type groups moved to groups IO. From the discussions I have read in this GMF group, most of the group owner's needs are different from ours who run graphic art type groups.

Maybe all members should be able to vote in a poll no matter what their posting privileges are in your group, but not in my group. Until a member posts at least one thing for me to approve, so I can try and determine they are not going to be a problem, they don’t get to participate in polls or posting to the group.

Ilene -- As you noted, posting and responding to polls currently have the same member permissions. Splitting them will not be a trivial exercise.

Trying to help, but am not clear on your settings. Do you currently have an Announcement group? This setting is not at all unusual, and like you, I would not have anticipated it having an adverse effect on polls. Hindsight is 20/20...

Some time ago we talked about trying to use hashtags to implement your requirements with respect to disabling the message archive (see /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/25505828#11723?). As I recall, this involved the following settings in Message Policies:

Hashtags Required
Hashtag Permissions -- Use existing hashtags, others bounced
Then set up just one hashtag for the entire group that only Moderators can use and deletes the topic after a short duration.

I suspect if you were to follow that recommendation from a month ago, you might be able to maintain your posting restrictions while allowing subscribers to respond to polls. Your Moderators would of course have to remember to use the hashtag every time.

Failing that, I think you might have to set up a Restricted subgroup, direct add everyone to that, and post your polls there.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

No, the group isn't an announcement group.
There are members who can post to the group. Maybe 15 or so of them.
The others settings are set that they cannot post.
?
Yes, hindsight is 20/20
I didn't think there would be a problem.
?
The message archive issue was another problem. It is not associated with the Poll problem and it concerned another group of mine. That issue has since been solved with the locking of messages and instructing the group that we run an email group.
?
Most of my members are elderly, handicapped and are computer illiterate. I am not computer savoy myself.
?
It is all I can do is have them reply to messages and in some groups share some graphics and stuff. To teach them to use hashtags would be impossible.
?
My groups aren't as complicated as some of the groups here and reading the posts. All we need is a simple basic platform to send emails to a group from.

That is one way to look at it.
But to?take part?in a poll what would it matter what kind of member they are??
They can't do anything but to check off an answer which you had given them choices.
They can't hurt the group in any way. Ilene

I am still confused as to exactly how you are keeping members from posting. Other than the Announcement setting under Spam Control there does not appear to be any group-wide way to do that.

Do you have all the other members (besides the 15 you mentioned) set to "Override: not allowed to post?"

A group used for announcements (only Moderators can post) might want to poll (all) their members

All members regardless of their posting privileges should be able to vote in a poll.
And why is that exactly?

Speaking for myself I cannot see any circumstances whereby I would join or remain in any group where I could not post. I also cannot see why members who cannot post should be able to vote in a poll.

A group Owner, or Moderator (with permission), controls if a Poll is created and what the choices are, which means a Poll is not necessarily unbiased. So having an option to limit which Subscribers/Members are permitted to vote is not a question of fairness. However the inability to allow all Subscribers/Members to vote is a restriction without merit.

BTW, I would think the most difficult thing might be to prevent any person from voting more than once (by having more than one subscribed email address), but I don’t think anyone is suggesting that should be a feature.

Maybe all members should be able to vote in a poll no matter what their posting privileges are in your group, but not in my group. Until a member posts at least one thing for me to approve, so I can try and determine they are not going to be a problem, they don’t get to participate in polls or posting to the group.
