Hi! I'm new to this; just started my private group yesterday (to escape Yahoo!)

Question 1: What is the use/benefit of the User Name?? I was system-chided when I failed to enter one, so I did. It wouldn't let me use my real name, saying it was already in use, so this must be system-wide and not just in my group.?? Is it perhaps a Chat handle? There's nothing in Help to clarify its use.

Question 2: How can I change/delete my User Name, which appears to be a permanent part of my profile and directory entry?

Thanks,

Alex @Perk

Question 2: How can I change/delete my User Name

?1.? It's a remnant from when the site was started and is unique site wide.? Not needed.

2.? Just go to your Account, select the Identity page, click on Edit for the Account Profile, delete (or change) whatever is in the User Name box, scroll down and click on Update Account Profile.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Duane. I had guessed that this field was vestigial.

But although you pointed me to the right place (where I had created the User Name), I had been back there myself, to no avail.

But I now realize there is a profile for every group I'm in, as well as an Account profile. I incorrectly assumed I should take it out in the same place I put it in. It came out easily in my Account Profile.

Thanks!

Alex

So if it's non-functional and not needed site wide, can it not be removed site-wide, or at least not generate reminders that the profile is not complete without it?

Hi Alex,

This sounds like a suggestion you should make in Beta ([email protected]). Usually Mark (Owner/Developer of Groups.io) will reply and/or add this to the TODO list. Make sure you add the Hashtag #suggestion to the subject line, to get his attention.

Alex,

So if it's non-functional and not needed site wide, can it not be
removed site-wide, or at least not generate reminders that the profile
is not complete without it?
Groups.io may be reluctant to remove it, as several site features have been suggested which would make use of it. Specifically the aspect of being a site-unique identifier for a user.

I don't know though, where any of those features stand in relation to all of the other feature suggestions on the table.

Thanks, Shal! That's good to know. I'll lay low and see what transpires.
