Reply from SMS/MMS Messages
#reply-to-group
Good morning,
I have setup a group that will be used to send notifications from a device that monitors the temperature in one of our buildings.? I have added my cell 'email' address for MMS messages (1234567890@...) as a member of the group that is moderated. I received the invitation to join the group and was able to successfully join.? I sent a test message to the group from another member and received the text message on my iPhone.? I then replied to the message via text but it was not received to the group.? I then tested a reply from a regular gmail account and the reply was received as it should.? Is there anything special that would need to be done to allow the reply to get back to the group or am I out of luck with this?? The idea of the group is to allow several members of our department to receive the alert notification when a temperature is too high or low in our building, then an individual user could reply back to the message they received via text to their cell phone, to let the other users know that they were responding to the alarm. Thank you for a great experience here at groups.io!? Since initially joining, I have found the interface is extremely easy to navigate.? And best of all, IT WORKS!? This coming from a Yahoo group that I had to abandon due to multiple failures of the services no longer working. Thanks again, Brett |
Brett, I sent a test message to the group from another member and received the text message on my iPhone.? I then replied to the message via text but it was not received to the group. My guess is that your text to email gateway doesn't respect the Reply-to field in the message header. Which means that instead of the group, your reply may have been directed to the From address of the message. Which may have been the other member's email address, or a dummy address (depending on the other member's service provider).
Or maybe your text-to-email gateway doesn't even do that.
? I then tested a reply from a regular gmail account and the reply was received as it should.? Most email service do respect Reply-To properly. Gmail certainly does.
For getting those messages into the group, an Email Integration might be easier than what you did. ?
My guess is that you'll be out of luck trying to have them reply to the alert via text. If they are using smart phones it would be much simpler to have them receive and reply to the events via email. Groups.io operates via email. While 1234567890@... looks like an email address, the action ATT initiates when something is sent to that address is a text message. So Groups.io sends email to 1234567890@... and you get a text message. You want to reply to Groups.io, but Groups.io is looking for an email, not a text message... so you need to reply via email. Your guess is as good as mine whether your email program will pick up the Groups.io address from the text message and direct the reply properly. I'd guess not... so you may need to enter the explicit address for your group at Groups.io when replying.

One could? set up a separate gmail account and google phone number.
Then set the gmail account to forward messages to groups.io When a text comes into the google phone number it is converted to an email message that would be forwarded to groups.io Ya think this strange mashup would work? -- Bob Bellizzi Founder, Fuchs Friends?? |
Thanks for the idea.? Here is where I'm at with it now.? The incoming message from the alerting device is currently working to send the initial alert message to , which is sending it out the the members.? I then received the mms/text message on my AT&T phone. The problem occurred on the reply from the phone back to .? It was never received back to the group messages. I just sent a message from my computer to MYPHONENUMBER@... and it appeared on my iPhone a few seconds later. I replied to that text message and immediately got a "Not Delivered" notice on my iPhone's screen. When I tapped that notice, an option popped up to "Try Again" or "Send to Email Address." Upon selecting the latter, entering a reply, and sending, I saw a notice on the screen saying "Sent to Email Address." Seconds later I got an email on my computer with the reply from my iPhone. The "From: address on the email was MYPHONENUMBER@.... I have an (old) iPhone 4S.

The only hurdle I see remaining is getting MYPHONENUMBER@... signed up to be able to send to Groups.io. Jim H Received from Brett Marchand at 8/22/2018 06:01 PM UTC: Here is where I'm at with it now. Thank you for testing this!? It was pretty easy to get my phone with AT&T onto the group when I received the invitation.
?
The reason I'm testing this functionality with is that I had originally setup a Google group for the distribution of the alert and reply, only to find out that Verizon blocks the messages being sent to the phones.? The messages were able to be received on other carrier's phones (iPhones and Andriods) and replied to (would be sent back to the Google group and distributed to the members, less the Verizon ones).? It would work great, except most our members have Verizon for their service.? I tried contacting Verizon to see what we might be able to do, but didn't make much headway and would need someone with a Verizon account to call and talk to tier 2 support to see if they could allow it to their phone, then couldn't guarantee that it would be for all phones or only that one persons.
