Wiki instruction or tutorial
Does anyone have a good wiki generation and maintenance tutorial or how-to resource to guide n00bs?
Anything that is particularly applicable to GIO would be very appreciated. I did some wiki work about 10 years ago and I'm kind of fumbling around with it in a private subgroup, but I would like to have something "good" that I can send my subgroup moderators to in order to help them learn without relying on my failing memory and fumbling discoveries. Thanks. |
Gary, Does anyone have a good wiki generation and maintenance tutorial or how-to resource to guide n00bs? We have the beginnings of something in GMF's Wiki. If you or anyone can help flesh it out please do so. There's also this about the message editor, the Wiki page editor is very similar. My brain is reeling.
I somewhat learned how to ¡°mediawiki¡± and now have to wipe that out and start from scratch. ? Although the the most used and supported platform, Mediawiki isn¡¯t user friendly. Bit at the minimum there¡¯s tons of resources and user guides/examples to show one how to ¡°learn¡± to set up pages, ToCs, Page subheadings, upload content, etc. ? How does one create an application with no idea how to or guide to actually use it? And then rely on users fumbling around in a frustrated frenzy to figure out, and then them explain how to use it? Am I crazy or just insane? ? inquiring minds want to know! |

Am I crazy or just insane? You might finish up that way if you try to set up a Table of Contents; that foxed me completely and utterly. Apart from that just sit, type, and format to taste. Don't forget that if you are not happy with what you finish up with you can always edit it or - in the worst case - delete it completely. If I can manage it (ToC apart!) so can you. :) Chris |

inquiring minds want to know!I'm not familiar with Mediawiki, but if you're trying to migrate wiki pages from another platform, it may be easier to do that using raw HTML.?Click the far right icon on the toolbar (it looks like three bars) to display the Advanced menu. Then click on the far-right icon on that. At that point you might be able to paste in any existing HTML into the site and save it. Be advised, though, that some constructs will be stripped so they can't be used as a vector for malware. Things that I know are stripped include iframes, Java/PHP scripts and (unfortunately) many inline styles. I hope this helps, but it probably doesn't. Bruce,
MediaWiki is the platform Wikipedia is on (not WYSIWYG). I'm not necessarily trying to wholesale flip content from the?MediaWiki platform?-- that was on another (non-YahCHOO!) forum that works quite well.? Flipped from Y!, what we will be creating is primarily from scratch, although very limited copying and pasting from the other (MW) site is also likely.? ?Not that big a deal though --? there's limited formatting allowed (NICE!) over there and?anything can be edited in text mode and copy/pasted over. Chris, My point was not that it's difficult to make changes or wipe out something?that didn't "work."? Rather, that GIO is obviously here to attempt to make money by selling upgrades to its platform, and the?users have to figure out how to use the dang thing with no comprehensive guides or manuals or templates or?"how-tos." Only?in America.? Hey, if we buy the upgrade do we get a wiki manual? < SMILE? >? At least?Google Sites provides sufficient?info on how to set up a site?and pages and?subpages, and, and, yadda,?yadda.? I'm thinking maybe set up our wiki on SITES, and a permalink on our forum to that wiki.? Who cares where the content resides, so long as it's easy?peazy to get to, use, and eazy?peazy for non-techies to post content?. -ken |

In MW you simply paste into the ToC page, a (MW?formatted) link to the new?pagename?that? you created (or alternatively use a full URL). If you haven't?yet created your new page that you want to link?to, you simply type [[any unique new pagename]]. Save the ToC page, click on the new pagename? -- and?a?dialog opens to create it. As such, those having some familiarity with the GIO web interface during normal interaction in a group shouldn't have too much trouble with the wiki.? The Table of Contents is another matter. I don't like the way that works, and others are pretty disenchanted with it, too. I suggest you provide that level of wiki structure via a bulleted list and anchor tags and let people populate the underlying material from there as appropriate. If you intend this to be entirely free-form and flowing with lots of user input (like Wikipedia) then an external solution could indeed be a better option. Most of the folks here in GMF are fairly tech-savvy, but even then there's lot of repeat discussion on GIO features and foibles that never get populated in the wiki...and frankly, are unlikely to get read even if they were. Is that basically saying - one wiki page with anchors to simulate separating it into multiple pages and a ToC? It's? not going to be as free flowing as Wikipedia, but members will want to to1) two things 1) contribute to existing content about general aspects of the model of boat (equipment, fixes, leaks, etc.) that might be valuable to any member of the group. 2) create their own "my projects" page to present their own fixes, upgrades,? etc. that they did specificallyally to their own boat. -ken |
Ken,
How does one create an application with no idea how to or guide toThe usual goal is to create controls that are direct and obvious in their usage. For the most part the Wiki is like that - very simple. So don't try to over-think it. Even the much maligned ToC is simple - perhaps too simple for its own good. It has only one control: the nesting depth of header levels to include. It has only one way of creating entries: apply Header formats to the section headings. Start at Header 1, use lower levels as needed, without skipping levels. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
ken,
In MW you simply paste into the ToC page, ...Different context for the word ToC. In Groups.io it lists the sections of a single page. To create something like a ToC over multiple pages one would "simply" paste page links into a page, much like GMF's wiki home page. Numbers and levels would be up to you to implement by hand though. Hey, if we buy the upgrade do we get a wiki manual? < SMILE >Maybe if enough people buy an Enterprise upgrade. Just one won't pay for many hours of a good tech writer though. Though I suspect tech writer wouldn't be Mark's first hire, a support rep might be. note - I have no issue with setting up a ToC on a wiki page, so let's not go into the weeds of using a ToC vs not using a ToC.
. But, I noticed today that the Table of Contents tags on our wiki page no longer jumps down to the associated header on that page.?? Each ToC line now operates as an?exteral link?and now opens a NEW WEB PAGE (oriented at the associated header location.) Has anyone else noticed this??? Was there a change in how the ToC operates (or have I lost my mind?)??? [issue also raised on the Beta group] |
