Which is best approach when new member wants to join a specific group?
Very few of the people wanting to join my group are handy with computers so I need to provide them with relatively simple instructions on how to join. I think I see two ways to join a group if the person does not already have a groups.io account. I When a new member wants to join a specific group and that group requires membership to be approved by moderators, which is the best process? ? 1. Create an account (sign up) with email and set a password; then go to the specific group and click ¡°Join This Group¡± button, or 2. Go directly to the specific group and then click the ¡°Join This Group¡± button. This approach seems to kill two birds with one stone: the account is created and the group is joined. However, in this process, there does not seem to be a way to set the original password rather just a way to change a password. How does the password actually get set in this approach? Does the new member enter a password and click on change this password since there is no ¡°set password¡± option? ? Don |
Don, When a new member wants to join a specific group and that group requires membership to be approved by moderators, which is the best process? Possibly more important than whether or not group membership is restricted, is whether the members will likely want or need access to the group's web features. If not, a path by way of Direct Add, Invite, or the +subscribe email command will likely prove simplest for them.
If the group's membership is restricted (moderator approval required) then the button will be labeled "Apply For Membership In This Group". That nit-pick aside...
This is what I would suggest, assuming the member is likely to want or need access to the group's web features.
Po-tay-toh, po-tah-toh. If the person has not previously had a Groups.io account, or has not set a password in their account, then they could "change" their password from nothing to something. Notably, setting a password is not required for web access as a Groups.io group member. The member can use the "Email me a link to log in" button instead, and never bother to have a password. The Delete Password button actually does what it says, and thereafter the member can either use an emailed link to log in, or can use the "Forgot your password, or don't have one yet?" link to set a new password.
