Merge Groups
There is no provision for merging groups, nor is Mark inclined to do so, as he replied when someone else him asked about doing it.

if I could only move messages from one to another that would be enoughMark seems to be receptive to the idea of moving messages between a main group and it's subgroup(s), but isn't very enthusiastic about moving things between groups.? That would be a huge task to program (and debug) and would be waaaay down the road if it ever happened. Wouldn't it just take a json import function, since we already have an export function?I think Mark's main concern is that folks might hijack a group or information they don't own or have rights to. ?? You only make the export and import functions available to group admins, so the data could move only under the authority of the forum owners.
I don't see that as a security issue.... we already have export, which is the "more dangerous" function reading your response. Adding information to a forum is the right of anyone in the forum actually, so I honestly do not follow your logic. Even just a way to "forward" a message or topic to another group would help... In my case, I started a new group here because it was questionable if we could move the yahoo group. Then the Yahoo group got together, made me the owner, and I migrated the Yahoo group. I now want to merge the smaller, newer group to the recently migrated group. Greg |
Greg,
Adding information to a forum is the right of anyone in the forumActually, no. The TOS requires that you have the right to add anything you post (that it is not trade-secret, or invasive of someone's privacy, or would be claimed as someone else's copyrighted work). So importing messages in bulk runs the risk that you are importing material which you don't have the right to import. The Easy Yahoo Group Transfer mechanism actually presents a risk in that regard, but Groups.io made a conscious decision that they will rely on the Yahoo Group's admins (owner or mod) running the transfer to make that determination. If Groups.io ever implements a way to move content from one Groups.io group to another I think it would be a mechanism that verifies the source and destination, probably not an import from an exported file. Huh? if the admin of a group wants to import posts to another group he is admin, it's not his right?
This is what I want to do, please don't extend it outside of groups.io, or where the members of the from and to groups do not approve. This is simply merging 2 groups.io groups. So, I'm getting nowhere here, who is the person/persons who I should really be talking to? Greg |
