trying to set up my io group before I port my yahoo group over...

In picking a visibility option, why is it that if I choose?

"listed in directory and private messages"

I will not be able to change it back at a future time?
Why is this even an issue?

What you can't change is the "private messages" part.

To effectively tell subscribers their messages can't be read by non-subscribers and then later change that is a violation of trust that it appears Groups.io doesn't choose to allow.

Jim is correct.?Note that these settings appear in the home page of your group.

If you have a public message archive, group messages can be read by ANYBODY...they don't have to even need to have a groups.io account. In my groups, we consider this a desirable thing to attract new subscribers; but if I was running a private group and suddenly decided to make all past messages public, I think existing subscribers would have every right to be upset.
