How to Transfer a Yahoo Group, but Reduce the Photos Section #howtoguide

I have a question - feeling it is time to transfer my Yahoo Groups over to Groups.IO, now, as it appears that Yahoo Groups has finally had the last nail placed in the coffin with the advent of true zero support.? So, I have a couple of groups that have been in existence for about 8 years or more, and the Photos sections have become quite large.? I am trying to keep my groups under the free size limit, as I don't have any way to charge my list members for a larger option.? Is there any way I can reduce the number of photos that will transfer across?? Or, after the transfer, is there a way I can delete or remove older photo albums?? Both groups have photo albums that are set up by the month/year, so it is relatively easy to figure out which photo folders are the oldest, and just delete those older year's photo albums.? Any suggestions would be very welcome.?

Patty -
When I transferred my largest group, Mark sent me an email and asked me if I wanted to keep the photos as they were, have him resample them down in size, or go premium. I went premium for a number of reasons, but I could have given approval to have him resample them so none were larger than 1024 x 1024. That would have dropped the total size from 1.7 Gb down to 413 Mb and easily have given us all the images at a size equivalent to the largest image that would fit on a single screen. That may be the solution to your situation, but not knowing how much space photos currently take up, that's not an absolute answer. When Mark ran the transfer he gave me the options, and knowing then what could be done made the solution pretty simple. That may be the best way for you to proceed.

Patty,

So, I have a couple of groups that have been in existence for about 8
years or more, and the Photos sections have become quite large. I am

I concur with Dano's comment - when one of my groups faced this issue the transfer agent suspended the transfer long enough for me to select a lower resolution for the images. That brought the total in under 1 GB.

Or, you could delete the ones you no longer need before starting the transfer. Assuming you can get that to work.

Or, you might be able to request that the transfer agent skip the older folders.

Or, you could upgrade to Premium for one month and take care of deleting enough to get back down under 1 GB after the transfer. That's assuming your total is under 10 GB.

?????????????? Or, you could delete the ones you no longer need before starting the transfer. Assuming you can get that to work.

??????????????

I don?t know if this only refers to my old yahoo group, but I?ve been trying to delete the non-needed fotos there (of close to 1500) ever since we were transferred. But unfortunately it?s not possible to delete, neither fotos nor albums.

Thanks Shal and Dano.? I suspect I may do a combination of suggestions - resize and possibly delete the very oldest.? Need to keep room for new photos.? My largest group's Photos section alone is 2 GB's.?

Second question:? I think I have a very small handful of of Yahoo Groups list members who went over and signed up for our inactive, placeholder Groups.IO mirror group.? Will that pose an issue when we transfer from Yahoo Groups to Groups.IO?? If so, I can try to unsubscribe them prior to the transfer.? And, what about members who have signed up for Groups.IO that are NOT Yahoo Groups members?? I assume their memberships will remain as is.?

If you have time, you could grab a few of the photos to see which of the available settings would work best for your group.? On ours, 312x312 is fine since we really don't need much detail.? As a torture test, I uploaded a 10MB photo and it was reduced to 172KB.? Most end up around 50-100KB.? If it's an art group, you may not want to reduce them though.

Patty,

Second question: I think I have a very small handful of of Yahoo
Groups list members who went over and signed up for our inactive,
placeholder Groups.IO mirror group. Will that pose an issue when we
transfer from Yahoo Groups to Groups.IO?
If they joined the Groups.io group with a different email address than is listed in the Y!group those won't be recognized as the same person; which will result in them having two Groups.io subscriptions - which may cause them some confusion. That used to be a bigger problem, but now I think they can resolve this after the fact by merging those two Groups.io accounts.

Otherwise the only downside is that any address already present in the Groups.io Members list will be skipped when copying in Memberships from the Y!Groups. So those particular members will not have their subscription info (date joined, email delivery, posting privilege) copied over from the Y!Group. They've probably already adjusted their delivery setting the way they want, but you may want to double-check their posting privilege if any of them are troublemakers.

And, what about members who have signed up for Groups.IO that are NOT
Yahoo Groups members? I assume their memberships will remain as is.
Correct.

Alright.? I have finally pulled the trigger.? I am transferring my two very large and active Yahoo Groups over to Groups.IO.? Receiving the final email from Concierge Services telling me my "issues have been resolved", when they were not, and no reply back from Concierge Services sealed the deal.? We are truly now without any customer service support at all, and Oath has apparently decided not to invest any resources in a segment of their business that had, at one time, about 3 million users (or more, possibly).? That's a LOT of advertising eyeballs they are willing to ignore, and I find that inexplicable from my business/marketing experience.? Completely perplexing they are willing to ignore what clearly is a significant potential revenue stream.? But, it is what it is, and I love what Mark has done with this group chat platform.? For me, it's sort of what Yahoo Groups was and should be.? The fulfillment of the statement, "if you could recreate the wheel, what would it look like?"? So, over we all go.? Thank you everyone for your help.? I'm sure I'll have more questions as we sit in queue to be transferred.? And, my hope is, that the damage to one of my lists does not significantly affec the list transfer process.? I knew that was a risk I was taking in waiting, as Yahoo Groups continues to degrade.? So, crossing my fingers everything transfers over okay.
