@mentions
Greetings,
Will the ability to call out members by @mentions like in Facebook or Slack be available soon? I saw an exchange mentioning the end of 2017 /g/beta/message/11401?p=Created,,%40username,20,2,0,7039895 Thanks |

I should also "mention" that in groups.io, there is no systemwide account identifier outside of the user's email address. Sending a mention of the format "@username@..." is clumsy at best and could easily become a vector for spam. I'm sure there's an account number somewhere, but is not currently accessible anywhere and would be an equally clumsy patch.
The point I'm making is that implementation of this seemingly innocent feature would require a significant rewrite of existing user account and notification systems. Throw in the fact that a significant fraction of groups.io users never log in at all (they would have to be notified by email), and the likelihood of this occurring anytime soon strikes me as remote. Hope this helps, Bruce -- The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |
Bruce,
There is no one within management associated with this forum. Send such inquiries to [email protected] Actually Vera cited a message in the beta group, and that would be the most appropriate place to revisit the feature request. That particular topic is locked, but a new one, focused on this particular feature, could be started. Bruce,
I should also "mention" that in , there is no systemwide account identifier outside of the user's email address. Actually there is. In the account's Profile there is the User Name field. The leading @ prefixed to the field hints that it was originally intended for just this sort of usage. At present this field is optional, meaning that its use as a mention would be limited to users who set a User Name for themselves. In discussions on beta there were thoughts of making the field mandatory, either generally or in the context of anonymous groups, but no good solution for "email-only" subscribers was found. ? Throw in the fact that a significant fraction of users never log in at all (they would have to be notified by email), and the likelihood of this occurring anytime soon strikes me as remote. Some features don't play well with email-only users. Mention could, but as you say it would at least require the build-out of a notification mechanism. Rather than something ad-hoc I'd like to see that as part of the long-awaited notification overhaul, but that does seem to push it out of the "soon" category.
