Members not receiving group emails

Marie Alline

I have a couple of members in one of my groups who is having trouble receiving emails from the rest of the group. The group was originally set up to return to sender and they changed it to return to group, These two gals are able to send and receive their own emails but are not able to receive any of the other member emails. Would this be a problem from the original setting?

These two also use gmail and I noticed while setting one of my groups up that someone was reporting problems here? on the message boards with gmail and groups.io.

I'm just trying to get to the bottom of their issues and help them figure out how to handle this. Any input is much appreciated. Thank you!?

Is it possible that these members are unaware of the various tab sorts that gmail uses? I've found that problem with some of my clients who use gmail. My list serve emails in gmail end up in the Forums tab.

Marie,

I have a couple of members in one of my groups who is having trouble receiving emails from the rest of the group. The group was originally set up to return to sender and they changed it to return to group, These two gals are able to send and receive their own emails but are not able to receive any of the other member emails.

That's an odd symptom. Usually the complaint from Gmail users is that they receive everyone's messages except their own.

If the messages are being posted in the group's Messages section then those two members should receive them also, as long as their subscription is set to receive individual messages, and All of them:

And further down the page, in the Advanced Preferences:

Most members won't have selected Following Only, but that's one way of restricting what messages you receive so it may be worth verifying that it isn't the problem.

Would this be a problem from the original setting?

No. If it were the messages wouldn't be posted in the group either.

AnnH's suggestion that they check Gmail's alternative inbox folders, as well as Gmail's Spam folder, are worth checking before looking for more complex issues.

If they still don't find the group's messages they could also check their Email Delivery History tab in their Subscription page. This will tell them about recent delivery success and unsuccessful attempts. The dates in those reports are of interest - if the more recent date is success then there probably isn't a problem delivering messages to their Gmail addresses.

As a moderator of the group you could also check their Email Delivery History.

Shal, I think you may have hit the nail on the head! I just went to their accounts and All Messages was not checked. Heck! I didn't even know that was there! Good grief! Thank you so much!

Marie,

I just went to their accounts and All Messages was not checked.
It is interesting that they'd have done that and not remembered it. Or maybe they didn't understand what Following Only means and how it works. They might find this useful:

/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Help-Mock-up#Advanced-Preferences

Tell them to read on into the section that follows, on Muting and Following.

Heck! I didn't even know that was there!
Then you may be interested in that page also. ;-)

It can be a very handy feature in groups such as GMF and beta where you may be receiving more email than you'd want. Following Only lets you receive just emails on topics of interest to you. First Message Also and Auto Follow Replies are good companions to that selection.
