Display Name Locked - Bug or Feature? #display-name

I'm having some issues getting my members in one of my groups to edit their Display Name in, what is a restricted group, any restricted group for that matter.

For example, in any open group (no moderator approval to join needed), one can modify their Display Name via their Subscription/Group Profile/Edit Group Profile.? No issues there in an open group.

Now when trying to do the same thing within a restricted group, Display Name is not editable.? One must go into their Account/Identity/Groups Profile (your master profile) to make that Display Name change.? You can't change a restricted group (Group Profiles below your Account Profile) here either.? But you can change unrestricted groups here without issue.

I can find nothing on Display Names restrictions in the FAQ or anywhere on groups.io? I don't know if this is considered normal to restrict the display name in a restricted group but see no reason for the restriction either.

So is this a bug or a feature?? I suggest that it is a bug and will be addressed.?

Comments welcome.

Hmmm. I am unable to replicate the problem you are describing. I even disabled the Member Directory, and I was still able to change the Display Name on my test account via the group's Subscription path. Could you be logged in under the wrong email address?

Hi Bruce,

This applies to groups that are restricted.? Open groups are no issue.? As this group is open, the Display Name works correctly for a direct edit.

I tested this both with my owners account on my restricted group as well as a test account on the restricted group.

Sorry if I did not make this clear.

Thanks you,

It was me who was not being clear...I did my testing in a restricted group, and it worked just fine.

Sorry I couldn't help...

I just checked into your group, based on your message footer. You seem to have 14 subgroups, some of which are open, others are restricted. Is that what you're talking about?

I have no experience with subgroups...others will need to look into that and report back. But I can think of no logical reason why display name should be locked based on the spam control settings.?If that's actually the case, it sure sounds like a bug.

Bruce

Bruce,

Good point and something that a member in one of my restricted group mentioned...that if you edit your Display Name is the Main group, it will proprogate down through all the subgroups by default.

What I didn't know was that your main group is restricted yet will still allow Display Name edits.? So the the main group is exempt so to speak from the edit restriction while any restricted subgroup does not permit any Display Name edits except through the main group or via the account profile (master profile).

Sure seems an unintended restriction or bug.? Should I send this off to bugs or another group for higher authority review?

Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure that this is by design.? One person having several Display names within one group that includes subgroups could be very confusing to folks.

It may be by design but why not restrict the same to the open sub-groups?? This inconsistent implementation acroos open and restricted groups is more the issue, IMHO.

I actually like the flexibility as in a family group I use my nickname, in the Ham group I use the call sign, in the business group I use my full name.? This saves creating a bunch of IO accounts and then juggling the logins.

I'm not seeing any inconsistency.

The member or mod can edit a member's Display Name in the primary group, but not in any subgroups. This appears to be true regardless of whether the subgroups have open or restricted membership.
