Images - Copyright and other related issues?

Hi,
? A group that I'm a member of is allowing embedded images.? That's great because
it makes the group -much- easier to use.

? However - it brings up the issues related to copyright, spam, off topic images,
porn, etc.

? How do I, as a group owner, protect myself and my group members - is turning
off embedded images the only way to do that?? Don't I also have to require all
images posted to be moderated?

Jim,

However - it brings up the issues related to copyright, spam, off
topic images, porn, etc.
Those issues aren't much different, whether your concern is embedded images or message text.

How do I, as a group owner, protect myself and my group members - is
turning off embedded images the only way to do that?
If a member posts messages with undesired images you can generally treat that the same way as you'd treat posting messages with undesired language. That is, you discipline the member.

Don't I also have to require all images posted to be moderated?
You don't have a means to moderate only messages with embedded images, you'd have to moderate all messages. Which is an approach that may be appropriate for some types of groups. Groups with restricted membership generally have less concern with moderation of messages, but groups with open membership need to at least moderate the messages of new members, and there's a mechanism for that.

If there are particular members who are prone to posting undesired content you have some options for dealing with them. You do have a means to override the group setting for specific members, it is their Posting Privileges setting - found on their Edit Membership page. Get there by clicking on the member's row of the Membership table. You can set that member to be moderated or even disallow that member from posting.

Or you can remove and/or ban the member from the group.

I¡¯m not sure if embedded images are stored in the Emailed Photos album or not, but if they are you can delete them. If they are not stored in that album, probably the only option is to delete the post they were embedded in. I would suggest to your members to be careful about what images they post (Embedded or Attached), and if they won¡¯t then your only option to stop that practice is to kick the offender out of the group.

Shal,

? I'm confused - isn't there a way to control images separate from posts??

? As in I can?require all images (photos and files) to be moderated - and
can't I?prevent images?from?being embedded in posts.? Right?

All,

? I'd like to hear from you about your views on copyright issues ... Jim

Jim,

As in I can require all images (photos and files) to be moderated -
Note, I'm not talking about images uploaded to the Photos section, or Files uploaded to the Files section. Those are different from images embedded in or attached to messages.

You have the option to bounce, strip or moderate messages with Attachments. That includes attached files and images.

But embedded images may be contained in the HTML message body (data type), hosted remotely (http type) or attached to the message (cid type). I think only the latter would be affected by the Attachments control. See also this message on a related subject:

and can't I prevent images from being embedded in posts.
You can force messages to be plain text only. That's a bit more extreme than blocking or stripping just the embedded images.
