Mass update of moderation status #moderation

I recently migrated my group [email protected] from Yahoo Groups.? It looks like members were imported in moderated status, not "new user" moderated.? I use 2 statuses for moderation, normal and new user moderated.? Is there any easy way to mass update all of the moderated members to new user moderated?

Thanks,

David Simmons

No, unfortunately you have to do that by hand. I've suggested that Mark include an option during the transfer "make moderated members NuM" but no response yet. It should probably be suggested to him again on beta.

Ack, ok.? That's over 2,000 members I have to update...

David,

I wouldn't bother.

My reasoning is that these are members who had the moderation override in the Yahoo Group. Which means they either (a) were purposefully on moderation due to prior behavior, or (b) were still on moderation after joining, having not yet posted (enough) to earn being unmoderated.

Those of type (a) you don't want to accidentally unmoderate.

Those of type (b) weren't active posters before, and likely won't be now. So whether they are Moderated (M), or New Member Moderated (NuM), scarcely matters.

I'd just leave them as they are until they post (if they ever do). At that time you can decide whether to remove the moderation override. And since this will (likely) be an infrequent event you can take the time to look for prior postings from them, as a check for (a).

My reasoning for making the change is to be consistent.

(a) I don't have any users purposefully moderated
(b) I like the consistency of just approving messages and letting users get un-moderated instead of manually removing moderation

That said, I'm not going to touch all of the members.? I should have said that originally.? My comment was meant that should I need to make changes, I would have to touch a lot of members.

Ideally, I'd like to see the ability to (a) filter users by moderation type, and (b) select all users from a filtered list to make changes instead of only those I can see on the screen at that time.? An alternative to (b) would be an option to display all users on the screen at one time (filtered or not)

David,

type, and (b) select all users from a filtered list to make changes
I'm all in favor of being able to filter and sort the Members list by all fields, not just those that have column headings. But yes, Posting Privilege is one that comes up frequently.

Hi Shal
I don't believe that's true.
When my tiny group was migrated, no-one was moderated as we were a private, on all group.
However upon migration, I immediately got 'Moderator' messages to alert me. I checked membership and found all other members than myself were 'New' and awaiting moderation. This appears to be the default format.
Not such a bad thing, simply check the 'All' box at the top and changed to UnModerated. Problem solved.

For other groups- If any (members) coincidentally were still moderated, then yes you would have to manually restrict them. But surely numbers would be small anyway?

That can be the default for members who join on their own or accept an invitation - controlled by the New Users Moderated checkbox in the Spam Control section of the group's settings.

However I recently transferred three groups and can attest that the members retained their Y!Group posting Privilege, except for myself and another owner who were already in the Groups.io group. None of them transferred in with the NuM Privilege.

Not such a bad thing, simply check the 'All' box at the top and changed to UnModerated. Problem solved.

I do not recommend setting any members (maybe a very select few) to the Override - Not Moderated privilege. Use Default Post Policy instead. That way you can use the Moderated checkbox in the Spam Control section of the group's Settings page to stop a flame-war or other disruption in its tracks.
