Deleting folders #files

Matty Smith

As the owner of a Groups.io, I can see the trash can beside files and therefore delete them - even where I did not create them.
However, other members of the group, whom I have upgraded to ¡®owner¡¯ status, cannot see the trash can.?
Can the deletion rights on files be changed?
Thanks you
Matty

They should see it.? There was a recent report where someone on a tablet didn't see them, but they were there, just not visible on the same line.

Two things for the new owner to try:

-- Refresh the page. If that doesn't work,
-- Log out and log back in.

I am on a laptop running Windows XP. I assume the trash can is alongside the notebook and pencil symbol (Edit?) and a pair of scissors (Move/Cut?)? I have refreshed the page and I have logged out and logged in again ... still don't see a trash can symbol. I am the owner of 2 groups and can't see a trash can on either when I view files on the Files sections.

I have refreshed the page and logged out and logged back in again, but this did? not reveal the trash can against files - still only a notepad and pen symbol and a pair of scissors symbol. Might my settings have something to do with this omission?

Margaret,
Are you running Windows?? You might try Ctrl and the minus/hyphen symbol.? This should reduce the size of the window contents so you can see the entire window.? I find that recent website design often neglects to scale windows properly to the size of screen or browser window that the content is being viewed with.? Consequently edges of pages get cut off without the user having any idea they aren't seeing the whole page.?

Ctrl + and Ctrl - are useful to enlarge or reduce the font size or other elements on a webpage.? If it works properly, the text is re-flowed (if that's the right term) and the other page elements are adjusted to accommodate it.?

Similarly, is the window you are viewing with maximized to your screen size?? In a similar situation, I couldn't find a button on an app until I maximized the window, even though the window I was using was only pixels smaller that the maximized view.? Some of these things depend on the device you are using, I think.

Hope this helps.

Yes. Each of those icons should have a hover text if you hover the cursor over them - Edit (pad and pencil), Move (scissors), Delete (trashcan) and Report File (flag).

If you hover in the blanks space to the right of the scissors (about as far as the distance from the pad and pencil to the scissors) does the hover text for Delete show up? And if you click in that empty space do you get the delete confirmation pop-up?

I'm just wondering if the functions aren't available to you, or if it is just the icons that are missing from your display. Kind of a long shot, but I otherwise don't see why you'd be allowed to Move but not Delete - and everyone should see the Report File flag.

Sorry to say that neither of these suggestions helped.

There was no reaction to a mouse click anywhere along the line where the Edit and Move symbols show and crtrl- and ctrl+ did not produce anything either as the whole screen is available to view.. This is a mystery!

Double-check that you are actually an owner. If so, there will be a blue "owner" tag next to your email address in the membership listing.

Also check to see if someone has disabled files entirely in the group settings by mistake.

Failing that, I'm at a loss, given your other investigations.

Yes, I am definitely an owner. Files are not disabled. Thanks for suggesting this.

I am using Firefox v52.6.0 with Windows XP. I wonder if there is something with this combination of software and hardware that is causing the problem? I am about to install Chrome to see what the Groups.io website looks like under that browser.

I'm using Firefox 58.0.2 with Windows 7 Pro

Have you tried updating Firefox recently? For me recently Chrome has become
unstable and I went back to the upgraded Firefox.

Goodness, wouldn't want you to do that. I happen to have an XP system also running Firefox ESR 52.6.0 (32-bit) and it shows the icons as expected:

Thank you very much for all your help with this. I'm as baffled as you are! It's got to be something basic that is being missed?

The group I am hoping to transfer from YG is already present in Groups.io. It is not listed in the Groups.io directory and will have restricted membership with no content of any description available publicly. I don't know whether this information has any bearing on my current difficulties?

It usually is.

But I haven't contrived a situation where I see the pencil and scissors but not the trash can. As mod (with no privileges) I see all four icons. As I do as a member if it is my file; if it is not my file I see only the flag.

I can't imagine how or why it should have anything to do with what an owner sees in the Files page.

I'm at a loss. Maybe send a screen shot to [email protected] because you seem to be winning this round of "stump the experts".

Have you looked at files in other groups? I can make you a mod or owner at shalstest to see if the files there look different. Maybe we can tease out whether the issue is related to your account versus your group.

Thank you - that would be useful. I really appreciate your help with this problem.

Yesterday I created a test group and uploaded a small file - still only saw the pencil and the scissors and no trash can or flag.
