Way off topic, I think

I got this response from a member of one of my groups when I announced the switch to groups.io .? "Do you know that Group.io is a domain from Indian Ocean?? Aren't there any USA or Canada or England supported domains that we can use?"

I haven't a clue how to answer that.

Well simply research it on Google and give her an answer.

Virus-free.

I'd send them a couple of links and let them figure it out...

Well, perhaps they may be interested in Mark Fletcher, the man behind Groups.io.

and

and his "old pretentious" page!?

If they have ever used Bloglines (I have) for RSS feeds, they have used another product from Mark.
And he developed ONElist that eventually turned into YahooGroups!

Tell the person to put groups.io into Google and to tell you what s/he
finds.

Specifically it's the British Indian Ocean and the only inhabitants of that region are British and US military personnel on Diego Garcia. Can't get more UK and USA government controlled than that region of the world.

I'd be inclined to respond with a comment regarding bigoted thinking.

I wonder if they have ever seen or used links in the .tv domain.? .tv is assigned to Tuvalu, a tiny island in the South Pacific with a population of about 10,000 people.? I can assure you they are not the ones making all the American television-based web content that goes on those .tv links.
?
The top-level domain does not necessarily identify the location anymore.? It is just whom the domain was assigned to.? The owners of that domain can then "sell" use of the domain to other users.? (As is the case with both .tv and .io)
?

Andy

Very interesting... I don't even think about that anymore now the TLD's have become the "wild west" of DNS.??
Wikipedia says:
:?Entities connected with British Indian Ocean Territory
:?Popular with startup companies; little if anything related to the territory itself
So a possible response might be "Yes, the .io TLD is country code based, but the Registrar for the .io TLD does not require its domains to be based in the Indian Ocean Territory.? The groups.io domain is registered by Mark Fletcher who owns and runs groups.io from?Portola Valley, CA.? The vast majority of domains registered in .io have nothing to do with Indian Ocean Territory."

Thanks for this diversion.. :)

Anne,

I got this response from a member of one of my groups when I announced
the switch to groups.io . "Do you know that Group.io is a domain from
Indian Ocean? Aren't there any USA or Canada or England supported
domains that we can use?"
I'd say that no, you couldn't choose another domain except by choosing a different service.

Then if you want you can reassure him/her that the domain is administered by a U.K. company and the service itself is run by a U.S. resident (Mark) and hosted by U.S. companies (Linode and Amazon).

Thanks so much.

Good news that should be more disseminated

Actually you can use your own domain on the enterprise plan. Ask her/him if they would like to pay for it. ;)
