Changing email address immediately after subscribing - suspicious?
What does it mean - or what does it suggest - when someone joins a group, and then immediately changes their subscribed email address?? Not a small edit as if to fix a typo; but a completely different address?
Should I be suspicious? I often see people changing their emails, but usually not within an hour after subscribing.? I am trying to figure out what this means, and whether I ought to report it to the management. There are other things about this member that one might label 'suspicious', but I don't want to unnecessarily waste Mark's time. Thanks, Andy I |

However if that isn't the case, it does look suspicious. Frances ? |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi, good question. I also get a individual who is always changing their e mail. I get notifications from groups Io stating so and so has had a change of e mail But I don¡¯t know why That is very questionable to me, especially if they are always leaving the group and wanting to subscribe days later. Thanks for asking ? -Sugar, ?? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Andy

Should I be suspicious?Depends on your nature I guess.? I've had folks do this a few times, but never saw anything suspicious in it.? However, almost all my groups are Restricted, so they've already satisfied me that they are who they say they are. But I do not understand joining with one address, then barely an hour later changing their email address, their username, and their display name. Andy I |
Maybe they use different addresses for different purposes and accidentally joined with the wrong one. Not a small edit as if to fix a typo; but a completely different address?¡± ? Signing up with one account and then changing it to a second is no different in the long run from signing up with the second account in the first place.? The second account is now the account of record, just like it would be if they signed up with the second account in the beginning. ? I wouldn¡¯t lose any sleep over it. ? Could have realized they want to keep their groups.io e-mail separate from regular e-mail.? ? You might choose to keep an eye on this individual, but I don¡¯t see why.? Why not contact the member concerned and ask them? Cheers Ian On Sat, 23 Mar 2024 at 08:44, Steve Haas <Goatfisher2@...> wrote:

Does your group routinely post a "Welcome" message, or a monthly reminder? If not, it's possible that these people may not be aware of the "web only" setting (where they retain membership, but only access messages via the site, and don't receive an email for every post - or even a daily digest). I try to mention that whenever a new member joins, and it's included in a "mostly monthly" reminder I send out. I also make it a point to reply to each person who unsubscribes, and let them know of this "web only" option, if they are leaving simply because the list traffic picked up.?

(In Subscription). That could contain a short piece about controlling the volume of email: /helpcenter/membersmanual/1/controlling-the-volume-of-email-messages-you?single=true Or you can add a footer to all the posts for that group - through Admin, Settings, Message Formatting. Repeatedly might be odd, but might not. Whether the domain changes or not is key IMHO.
I own my domain, use a global forwarder. And while other anti-spam measures have worked well enough that lists@<mydomain> has been fine for 20+ years, if I started getting tons of spam to that address I'd change my list addresses and blackhole that one. So *maybe* this person keeps getting spam storms? |
Might not be odd. I have?a ton of emails. I'm in two Group.ios. One where I manage a group and then another where that group is a subset of a larger group.?
?
It's hard to say. I would ask them and see. If the nature of your group means people know each other, that's another possible way to suss out what's going on.
I'm happy to ping other community managers regarding this. I use Groups.io as part of a volunteer activity but maybe someone in the groups I'm in manage?Groups.io instances?professionally.
?
Good luck!?

This is precisely what I did in the last week. I noticed a new group that was relevant to me, went to join and noticed in the "bot" confirmation email that it was sent to my general purpose email address, not my hobby email address. Thus I quit the list in question from my general purpose email address and joined with my hobby email address. I have a few email addresses, two mobile devices and three PCs. Keeping the emails straight on all devices is a task of its own. Please allow me to put in a plug for the Groups.io mobile App. Not too long ago I was in zoom meetings with a couple prospective moderators and a co-owner. The entire? zoom session was about organizing files and testing permission levels to assist in that goal. Live during that zoom session, I was able set & reset member/moderator permissions for a user as well as revise the file system permissions all in real time. There's nothing like actually trying out the differing permission levels for both the file system and the user level in real time. I know I may have been able to do the same switching tasks on the PC, but to me it was easier with two devices. Cheers, Dave F. |
