Message with 14,989 blank pages

Hi - our group had a strange message posted to the group via web.

The message was a reply with 3 layers of untrimmed replies. When you view the message either on web or in your emails, it appears to go on to infinity with blank space. So I printed the page to a PDF, which is how I found out it was 14,989 pages long. Anyone who reads the message on web, cannot proceed to the next message because it is so far down the page.

I'm not sure how this happened. When I went and looked at the source for the last shown quoted text in the corrupted message the header seemed strange. Mainly these two lines.

That is not that persons normal Ref and Reply-To info. I can go and edit the message that is corrupted, but not sure if I need to also report this to support.

Peculiar. Maybe his cat took a nap on the Enter key. :-)

Those header fields should only show up in an email, not on something posted directly to the web site. This suggests the subscriber may have tried to cut-and-paste something from his mail client. Or maybe a binary object that had that many non-printable characters.?

You said that you used View Source. What character does all the whitespace consist of?
?

I'd suggest posting something about it in the beta group ()...if your group archives are public, maybe include a link to the message. Mark will probably want to look at it before you edit it.?

Having said, that I'm not inclined to react too strongly over a one-time incident. While it's certainly weird, but there's nothing built into the system that would keep a subscriber from composing and sending a message containing whatever they choose to type or paste into the editor.

Bruce

Once I click "Show Hidden Text" "Reply," "Like," and "More" disappear into infinity. I can only see the Source when the replied to messages are truncated.

Also, I made a mistake in my original post. The corrupted message had been sent via email.

As a member of this same group (SciFiDiscussion), who while likewise online at the group's GIO site, is experiencing this infinite scroll anomaly at the bottom of the message in question and while in that thread, when I'm viewing 'messages > topics' I cannot get past the post in question nor see any of the subsequent replies to that thread ¨Cunless I revese the display order of the messages in the thread. But then after doing so I then cannot see the earlier messages to the thread (since the oldest are now the first displayed).

If I set the display to 'messages > messages' then all the posts are seen in chronological order as normal interspersed among all the other posts (as well as those not of that thread topic) as usual.

If I were the owner or moderator of the group I would just copy the text of the problem post, re-post the text from as owner moderator (on behalf of the original poster) in a new reply to the thread, and then just delete the problem post.

I would also send a note the the OP advising that this was done.

That to me would seem the simplest way to resolve the eternal scroll-down anomaly/problem with that post.

Cheers!

What if you don't do that and leave the quoted text hidden, can't you (or the mods) edit the message and delete all the extra space?? That should at least take care of the displaying part.

Cheers,
